THE FIFER Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 ARE LICE A SIGN OF HEALTH OR WHAT no not really, i would'nt think, but does'nt mean ur birds are not healthy,
Guest Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 they only eat dead skin and a pigeon when in good health will shed loads of dead skin so plenty of feeding for lice to multiply ;D ;D
klinkley Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 yes agree with you on this product klinkley, i posted about this a while back on another thread saying it was one of the best products there was for totally removing lice and other insects, if other folk are happy to have lice on their birds thats up to them, I dont want any lice on mine , the product does go under a different name now but still one of the best available.here is the new name it is under. Vanhee Ungerzeifer Frei 11500 it was back in july when i posted this on a thread about moths in the loft in the fancy pigeons section TAMMY_1 Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 7:18am Quote Quote Report to Webmaster Report to Webmaster aye you Veteran of the Loft!! Posts: 7,103 Gender: Male Location: in your mind Try a product by Van Hee called Ungerzeifer Frei this should kill anything in ur loft, and that includes ur birds if u don't follow the instructions carefully, but it is an excellent pigeon product, I use this every year and very seldom ever see anything unwanted in the lofts, can be bought very easily from most pigeon supppliers Much better than powder getting up your snozzle. I read in BHW about putting vinegar in their bath water to rid the birds of lice, tried it and it doesn't work. I shall stick to the Van Verminex ( or whatever it's called these days). It costs about £10 a bottle.

Guest Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 Interesting thread. Don't know if lice are a problem for birds, but it is known that they remove them during preening, so seems the birds think they're a problem anyway. Rather not have them, and my problem with them is I don't know what they might carry: bit like black rat and bubonic plague, wasn't the rats it was the rats' tics that carried it. Household fly sprays are just permethrin-based insecticides, same stuff as most of the pigeon lice/mite sprays. Used to use vinegar in bath water but stopped it. Vinegar + water is a well known household cleaner: might be good for getting paint off the glass, trouble was it was lifting the skin off my hands too. :-/
Guest Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 From other threads, for example on quill mite, have been wondering about systemic action insecticides like ivermectin, which eventually get into the birds body fluids and kill insects which feed on them, like quill mite. I use garlic water in the bath and in the drinker, up till now for different jobs. But garlic doesn't know what job its there to do. ;D My question sounds stupid but is there any reason NOT to believe that garlic in the bath water kills insects, so garlic water consumed by the birds will also kill any 'internal' insects? Reason I ask, I've one particular pigeon YB kicking & stamping during the day as if it is being bitten by something, but like others I've watched, it doesn't seem to know where the culprit is? Beak goes to underside of rump, inside both wings, topside of rump, outside of both wings - usually in that order - which makes me think that its either internal, or something non-insect like a human stitch? Mentioned ivermectin because I was about to give it a try [harka-mectin] but Tammy has posted elsewhere that its not to be used during moult, so ruled out for 3 months. Any ideas folks?
Guest Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 fleas thats what iot is bruno lad fleas aint red mite as the only come out at night
Back garden fancier Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Once had chickens that had red mite, first they stopped laying then one or two looked ill. Final clue was they wouldn't go in at night. When I spotted the red mite, I've never seen anything like it. There were thousands all crammed in the cracks near to where the chickens perched at night. Duramitex sorted it out, and lesson learned!
polly Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Have given a few birds away recently and all happy with good condition. I use garlic in drinking water most days, also in the baths with salt, 2 or 3 x weekly. I use Jeyes fluid ( to recommendations) for a deep clean which gets rid of red spider amongst others, spring and autumn.
Guest Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 pigeons fit and healthy and have the greasy silky feathering then they wont have any problem of lice mites neva seen lice on any pigeon with silky feathering own up who has
weecunny Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 put salt in ur bath water for the birds that will keep the lice down
Elvan Willgrass Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 What is the best thing for quill mite, the ones that attach themselves right on the quill and not the feather lice?
chickadee Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 What is the best thing for quill mite, the ones that attach themselves right on the quill and not the feather lice? Never seen them before, what do they look like? are they like feather lice or different in shape?
Tony C Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 They look like tiny bits of dirt running along the quill. An old fancier friend I know dips his pigeons in a solution of 15ml of Duramitex to a bucket of water to get rid of them. Not tried it myself.
