Roland Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Moth Bals are very unhealthy for pigeons. Best left well away from loft. Mothballs contain paradichlorobenzene, or PDB, a chemical that can cause liver and kidney failure and severe anemia. Also cuases great problems when sustituted for Glue Sniffing. The end results are drastic.... often sooner than later they become hospitalized suffering from / with scaly skin on her hands, elbows and legs, unsteadiness and mental sluggishness shows the risks of sniffing mothballs. The effects from hanging then up for the air to circulate in a loft is not very wise. many have and seem to get away with it. I used to hang Vapona up. seemed fine. Other Moth balls may contain either 100% of either naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene. Both of these ingredients can produce harmful effects when they enter your system ... Luckily, there are some natural and non-toxic scents that also repel moths: lavender and cedar wood. You can buy alternative mothballs made from cedar balls scented with lavender as well as cedar blocks on hangers you can hang in your loft. You can also simply use cedar chips, or you can go another route, which is to make your own mothballs. I cut squares of fabric and stuffed them with dried lavender flowers, scented with lavender and cedar essential oils (all available at most health food stores), then tied the fabric corners together to make little sachets. It's simple. Helpful eco solutions are often on www.ecocycle.org.
Mr Yorkie Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Does anyone have any remedies for stopping moths eating the feathers of birds? We have used moth balls, fly strips, duramitex and other disinfectants and used smooth edged feeders and drinkers but nothing seems to cure the problem. Each day when emptying out the water trough there is always a few dead moths on the water surface. It's not affecting the racing of the birds as they are still winning but doesn't make them look good!
Guest shadow Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 fly spray will kill them spray all the nooks an crannies in the loft

Guest Doade Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 I bought these smoke bombs last weekend, used one and it made no difference still see lice and chipped flights in the birds. I have been told to use horse wormer in the drinking water
Guest IB Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 Maybe have another look at the damage, and the cause. Its not moths, they basically don't have a mouth that can chew.
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 Maybe have another look at the damage, and the cause. Its not moths, they basically don't have a mouth that can chew. And those are words of wisdom? I think not what do you think moth balls are for ? to deter moths from eating clothes - maybe they suck the holes in them (evil)(shrug)
kiateapigeons Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 it the moth Larvae that chew feathers not the moths also you will see in the corners like little pods look like fluff just get rid of these either by using a blow torch make sure birds are not in way or not flammible also they hate jeyes fluid hang moth ball in a old pair of tights or washing tablet bags had this probem in the past

Moths don't eat, they exist to lay eggs. The eggs hatch into caterpillars, and they exist to eat. Don't think feathers would be the food of choice for the grubs, and don't see caterpillars getting a chance to survive in a pigeon loft either.
thunderbigbaws Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 how do you get rid of moths in your loft
pjc Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 spray loft out with duramitex, hang some mothballs up.
