ally mac Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 This bird came in today with a big strip missing from his neck. It has taken all the flesh of through to its throat. Any advice on what to do? is ther too much risk of infection for it to survive? All advice appreciated. Al.
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 is there anyone in your club who can stitch birds?
sapper756 Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Looks like a good stitch job will do the trick, what is it,s ring number?
ally mac Posted June 22, 2008 Author Report Posted June 22, 2008 Unfortunately theres nobody for miles, nearest club is 70 odd miles away.
sapper756 Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 I see a displaced feather hanging from the breast, is it burst up underneath also?
ally mac Posted June 22, 2008 Author Report Posted June 22, 2008 There is no damage underneath, it was just a loose feather. The bird is a year old.
Guest dogeon Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 by the look of the ring its a 07 belg what is the ring no' as ive lost a stock 07 belg that looks like this one
Guest spin cycle Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 has the skin just 'sprung apart' or is there a chunk missing ? if it's the former then you may be able to use an antibiotic 'purple' type of spray that stock farmers use...you'd have to be careful that close to the eye (shield it)....at least you'd stop infection. difficult to gauge wound from photo but bird looks quite bright in itself. hope this helps(ok)
Guest IB Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Wouldn't try stitching that area, think a needle would do a lot more damage than the superficial stripping thats been done already. Basically make sure the wound is clean by dabbing it with cotton wool or tissue paper dipped in warm soapy water, then use an antiseptic on it - either spray or cream, cream maybe best bet cos you want to seal it. Then put the bird in a spare box and leave it to do the rest.
ally mac Posted June 22, 2008 Author Report Posted June 22, 2008 Thanks for the advice, the skin is actually missing so there might be too much of a gap to stitch. It does seem okay despite the wound. I will keep it clean and cross my fingers.
ally mac Posted June 22, 2008 Author Report Posted June 22, 2008 I have just realised the way I worded the post is a bit misleading. The bird is one of mine. Sorry for the confusion. Al.
Lennut Tar Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 I have just realised the way I worded the post is a bit misleading. The bird is one of mine. Sorry for the confusion. Al. To me !!!!!!!! it does not appear to be bleeding etc, so all I would do is. get some betadine iodine & spread it all over the wound & it will soon dry up in time & it will be no worse for the experience. PS, Bugger the pigeons for now ;D ;D ;D the grand prix has just started here, so I'm off. Enjoy.
robinthfc Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 I tend to just leave them now unless the crop is damaged, they normally just heal up on their own. Sometimes I just leave them in the loft if no bones are broken.
Tom Avis Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 I would put some STER-ZAC powder on it. Fantastic stuff it's cheap and easily available from the chemist, it's proper use is for nappy rash and healing the umbilical(sp) cord on babies, it drys the wound and stops infection. Highly recommended. Tom
Ronnie Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Slap a load of vaseline over it .That will do the trick
Guest Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 this works for me keep applying a past made up of flour and water ,apply as often as pos then leave it untill it falls off .one of my birds came back with no skin or feathers on his entire head just all the skull showing done this ,and it worked .

I will keep it clean and cross my fingers. i really think thats the best way, nature will cure that in no time , i think it looks worse than it is ,,as the bird is bright enough, best of luck
ally mac Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 Bird is doing fine. wound has dried up and he seems happy enough. Hardy things pigeons right enough. Al.
