FoxesFan4Ever Posted March 1, 2010 Author Report Posted March 1, 2010 Hi all, Just a quick query please. Been into check birds tonight and 2 are huddled up in the corner together. To be sure they are getting the meds in the water I picked one up to take him to the drinker. Turned him upside down to check his number and lots of liquid came out his mouth. Its brown liquid and the vitamins the vet gave me are brown so maybe he has had a drink and thats it coming back but there seemed to be an awful lot of it compared to what they seem to drink usually. My question is: could this be another sympton of illness or am I likely to be right and he is just full of undigested liquid. Thanks all

Thanks all are the crops of the birds in question bloated and full of fluid? if they have recently drank ,then its possible this is the reason they have water in their mouth. open their beak and smell the fluid...see if there is a bad smell.
Guest bigda Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 nothing to worry about you have squeezed its crop , and tuning it up side down the water it has drank will flow out, why the medication to young birds , did the vet tell you to do this

Thanks all The fact that you are required to give meds, and that they are huddled up, I would be a little concerned :-/ what is the meds for?
Guest strapper Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 if im right then these birds have been diagnosed with worms..so this is the treatment that the vet has prescribed , what worrys me is that the birds needed to be helped to take on water.
Guest lenwadebob Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Sounds to me like Sour Crop (Candida) which is a common acute or chronic fungus infection especially of the digestive tract. I would separate affected birds and give NYSTATIN (veterinary) and a high level of vitamin A

I would separate affected birds and give NYSTATIN (veterinary) and a high level of vitamin A this is what i expected bob....if the birds have a full crop of fluid and been like it for a few days then its possible that any medication orally would not be affective. i lost a good hen through this ,i now know its best to give an injection to bypass the blockage in the crop. the vet prescribed tablets for this and i followed the procedure but still lost the stock hen.
Guest joe muzz Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 DID YOU NEED TO TURN THE BIRD UPSIED DOWN TO SEE THE RING NO
sammy Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 think there is a lot more than worms being the problem here :
Guest bakes Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 did you squeeze the birds crop or had them upside down in the hand could be nothink to worry about but also could be sour crop fungus problem what are you treating them with to sort out the worm problem you had all the best.
FoxesFan4Ever Posted March 5, 2010 Author Report Posted March 5, 2010 Antibiotics have arrived (Sinulox drops) and birds are on the 2nd dayof treatment and seem to be responding so hopefully the end is in sight. To all who have offered constructive help during this time thank you so much. A particularly heartfelt thanks to Owen for your so kind offer. Will give another course of Harka-Verm after the Sinulox and then I will take you up on it if I may. Thanks again
