FoxesFan4Ever Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Hi all, Got home from work this morning to find my 1 and only young bird from last year had died in the same circumstances as the other one, ie just keeled over. I find it hard to believe both have had a heart attack and I am sure something is killing them off one by one. I don't know where to go to get help as my vet has already told me she knows jack about pigeons. Sorry to bother you all with this but if anyone has any ideas please let me know Thanks
greenlands Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Sorry can't help you with this one, there are a few good lads on the site will give you a bit of advice, maybe later in the day. :-/ Lindsay

Tony C Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 If taking to a local vet make sure they test for Herpervirus, Streptococci, PMV & Paratyphoid.

pigeonpete Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Sorry ro hear of a second bird. Was it looking/acting healthy before hand? And how are the other birds looking now?
FoxesFan4Ever Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 Hi, All the other birds look fine to me but as a novice I wouldn't know any better if they looked ill. Droppings seem fine too but same thing applies. How much do PM's generally cost?
pjc Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 http://www.allanimalsvetclinic.co.uk/about-animal-vet-clinic/pigeon-care-services.aspx £23.50

FoxesFan4Ever Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 Hi, The loft is rodent free. Yes I am feeding farm seeds. Winter/resting mix at moment and moving onto breeding/racing mix in a week or so. Is farm seed bad?

Farm seeds not bad, just depend where they are stored, if rodents can access the place where they store on the farm. do the birds go out at present? Any chance of being poisoned?
Guest bakes Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 have an post mortem done bud so you no whats going on in your loft farm corn is good as long as its stored right away from rodents as rat urine or mice urine is a big killer all the best
Guest cosmic dave Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Is it worth having a word with Dudley ? :-/ David
OLDYELLOW Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Some good advice here , i would recommend getting a autopsy done on the last pigeon thats died
Guest IB Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Sorry to hear of your problem. Cold weather would delay dead bird decomposing, so definately go for bagging for autopsy, your vet may know nothing about pigeons but can certainly arrange that. Wouldn't do any harm sending a sample of feeding for analyses too, but I take it that you have other birds and they are fed same stuff? But at least you would be able to rule feeding out too.
FoxesFan4Ever Posted February 24, 2010 Author Report Posted February 24, 2010 Hi, My friend who gave me most of my birds came over yesterday and had a look. He says its either cocci, canker or worms. I am now giving a 5 day treatment for cocci/canker in the water. I have had 4 eggs hatch last night, will this treatment affect the young ones? The birds are incredibly quiet, not cooing or anything. Some are sitting facing the wall and looking like they are taking deep breaths, others just seem a bit lethargic and some dont seem too bad, 2 have even made a nest and laid the first egg. Just letting you know whats happening, will keep you updated whether you care or not. Thanks for all the help and advice.

OLDYELLOW Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 sounds like your friend is doing you more of a dis service by treating blind canker can be visable and does flare when pairing due to stress , worms arent visable to the eye as i suggested before you should only treat for diagnosed ailments or you can make the situation worse by giving the ideal enviroment for the ailments to get worse

BUT THATS MY CHOICE WITH MY BIRDS WOULD NEVER PRESUME TO TRY AND DIAGNOSE A M8'S SICK BIRD BLINDLY YOU COULD CAUSE UNTOLD PROBLEMS

Thanks for all the help and advice. wether you take my advice or not thats upto you but get one of the worst to a vet.the way you describe them is very unlikely they will get any better from treatment for cocci or worms..canker can make them go bad and look for breath but i would suggest ignoring all those factors and get one examined. ive a little knowledge of illnesses dont underestimate the importance of a vet when you have birds dying. even although i have a knowledge of illnesses i have limitations and thats where the vet takes over from me
FoxesFan4Ever Posted February 24, 2010 Author Report Posted February 24, 2010 It wasnt totally blind diagnosis. True he is not a vet but he has over 40 years experience with pigeons and has seen most ailments several times. He came to my house and handled the birds, checked the faeces, eyes and weight and rather than diagnosed what is wrong with them he has discounted what is not wrong with them and by a process of elimination he has come up with the 3 most likely candidates. I am well aware of the danger of treating blind but while the bird makes its way to its autopsy I cannot and will not stand by and do nothing. I am not throwing baytril down them, I am simply giving a preventative medicine which I will do several times through the year whether they have it or not. I do appreciate your comments though and I am grateful that you have taken the time to make them but I have to be fair to my friend as he is not on this forum to defend himself. All still friends I hope
