fletch Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 am starting to get pist off with my birds av had about 5 or 6 youngsters that seem to be coming on well then there dead in the nest.this is in the space of about 6 weeks. my birds are all fit and healthy.could it be bad parenting because there yearlings???? i know last year there was a few saying that the black nest felts were causing death in the nest but these were a week old if ii remember right, was wondering if you were using black nest felts as could be anything like this, but not normal to have dead at that age.
Guest frank dooman Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 sounds as if somehow they are getting poisened with something dont think they would get to that age if they had samonella but this is the time i would get a vet involved right away have any survived or do they all die??
chris h Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 using tabbaco stalks and shavings.and am feeding bamfords allrounder
chris h Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 sounds as if somehow they are getting poisened with something dont think they would get to that age if they had samonella but this is the time i would get a vet involved right away have any survived or do they all die?? i have a few that are fine. and my nest boxs are all made from new wood.
Guest frank dooman Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 are the old birds that are feeding them flying out??
chris h Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 yeah only 2 days a week and there only out for about half hour when i get in from work
chris h Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 i put red cell in there water a couple of times could this cause it??
Guest frank dooman Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 might be nothing to do with it chris but ive seen old birds starting to pick up stuff outside the loft to feed the y/birds like slugs which shouldnt kill them but some garden plants will so if they are picking at them that could be your prob if they arent getting some minerals grit/salt etc from you they will go get it some where is that possible i cant remember exactly what plants are bad for them worth thinking about and remember it might not be in your garden
cooey stuey Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 sounds like salmonella to me other symptoms are swollen leg joints or dropped wing best get the dropping tested
Guest anthony Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 i have a few that are fine. and my nest boxs are all made from new wood. Sometimes new wood will give toxen fumes especialy when in enclosed space. Is your new wood solid wood or manufactured type? Just a guess
kev01293 Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 chris how much red cell are u putting in the drinkers? i doubt its that but i was told that if u give to much red cell that it can be toxic to pigeons but i would have thought u would have to put a lot in :-/ i put a small spoonful in to a 4 pint drinker once a week and mine are fine i think its the selenium in red cell that can be toxic for pigeons in large amounts but not 100 per cent on that :-/ maybe someone on here knows ? hope u find the cause mate kev
WUL.D Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 have you treated for salmonella/paratyphoid or vaccinated? could have a couple of carriers... if you have not long started i would suspect you have pigeons from a few different sources???
blackdog Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 something not right there chris, i would get them tested as soon as possible mate, dont think it would be the red cell as they would all be effected, younsters at 3 weeks old shouldnt be dying unless you have an underlying problem, could be 1 of a few things mate
Guest Davy Fleming Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 Extraordinary Chris, As I have now had 6 die in the nest in the last 3 days all being between 2 and 8 days old and the ones I found this morning were out of the stock loft so they weren't getting out to pick anything up. The old birds (yearlings) look like show doos as well so don't know as just pis--d off at moment with that flippin Sparrow Hawk then this MMMMMMMMMMMMM Sometimes you just feel like jacking it. HEY.
Guest Owen Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 It is very difficult for those of us who are remote from you to try to be positive and suggest something to help you. I would certainly look at the posiblity of it being Salmonella. But it could be something like canker or cocci. If the condition of both the youngsters and the old birds is poor, you could suspect worms. You definately need to have the droppings tested and a swab test as soon as you can. I was asked to look at some youngsters that were dieing a couple of years ago. At first I could not work out what was wrong except that the ones I opened up had liver damage. So after messing about for a while, getting no where, I went to the Owner's Home to take a look. The birds were housed next to a privet hedge, and it was that that was killing them. You could see that they had plucked the leaves through the wire mesh. It would be of help if you could give us a bit more information. What are the droppings like? Have you had the bird's droppings tested recently? When did you last treat for the common diseases? Things like that.
Guest grizzler Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 something not right there chris, i would get them tested as soon as possible mate, dont think it would be the red cell as they would all be effected, younsters at 3 weeks old shouldnt be dying unless you have an underlying problem, could be 1 of a few things mate best advice ;)
