pjc Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 i've never had to clip beaks and think the use of mineral block/pic pots help this as the beak will be worn down when the birds pick. Some birds however do seem to need there nails clipped occasionaly but be careful not to cut them back to far. Phil
THE FIFER Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 yes you can clip them but make sure you dont cut into the vain, dont cut so to make the claw straight keep it curved,

Roland Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 I'd never clip my birds claws... they use them in flights to hook onto tail feathers... says energy etc.
Lennut Tar Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 I'd never clip my birds claws... they use them in flights to hook onto tail feathers... says energy etc. This is very true !!!!!!!!!! But & have had many stock birds over the the years etc, that need there nails clipped at times on a regular basis (Mainly hens). Because what happens in most cases, is that they tend to swist back on them selves & up when they grow long & the birds can not hold onto anything, for what I have seen, "most uncomfortable". Never a problem thou, you just clip them with a normal pair of nail clippers, & then they are fine again. Enjoy.
Hamster Girl Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 Or you could be cheesy like me.. I take an emory board nail file and just rub down on the claws a tiny bit. Generally enough to dull the point and to negate extreme growth - that way I don't cut them to the quick - especially since I have no styptic powder at the moment. D: They seem to do all right with me filing away, never though, have I had to clip beaks.. I did file my old norwhich cropper's once.. right after he pecked my eye. He never did it again for the rest of the time I had him.
THE FIFER Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 when a bird stands on the ground the end or the point of its claw should be on the ground, if its lying to the side, it needs clipped.
jimmy white Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 when a bird stands on the ground the end or the point of its claw should be on the ground, if its lying to the side, it needs clipped. i would go along with this, but most birds getting out regular never need go like this ,, mostly older stock birds this happens to, but easily clipped if very careful [avoid the quick]
