Guest Owen Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Sion was a top Belguim fancier that died in the thirties as far as I can remember. It was certainly a long time ago, for sure. So his birds have been in other hands since then. That would be about 80 generations. In addition to that, the Belguims have never been interested in keeping their birds pure. So what you have are crossbred birds that came from Sion's loft 80 years ago. More important than that, each Fancier will have his own individual way of selecting the breeders. So about the only resemblace to the original Sions may be the colour. Red Checkers and Mealies were prominent. The originals were selected to fly the distance. But if you really want to know what they can do, why not ask the bloke you got them from. He should know.
andrew gooch Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 yep i hade some good ones reds & red pieds back in the 80s good reliable birds are thay still around
Guest IB Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I think you'll find Paul Sion was French. He was famous for reds. They went 60 - 600 miles, and formed the base of many Scottish lofts in 1960's, where in Lanarkshire at least they were called 'seeons' by the locals. I think Dr Anderson, Armadale might have been amongst the first to introduce them here
micci Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 had a beautiful looking Sion cock bird, looked the part but the best he did was 5th club Banff in 1969
PIGEON_MAN Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 The original Sion pigeons were founded by Paul Sion who lived in France and died in 1947,his son Robert Sion carried on with the birds after his father died.I have 1 or 2 books written by Chas Heitzman about the Sions he imported them into the USA in 1931. My avater is a Sion cock very simular in looks to a lot that I have.
TheHigg Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 mabee i am wrong but were dr andersons not brickoux sions kenny droog formerly of boness kept them
Guest Owen Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Yes you are right. There were plenty about in the 60s. But I will stick to my main point. Sion has been dead for so long that the idea of a strain of pigeon retaining anything of the qualities he selected for is ridiculous in the extreme.
PIGEON_MAN Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 mabee i am wrong but were dr andersons not brickoux sions kenny droog formerly of boness kept them You are right Dr.Anderson was well known for the Bricouxs.
micci Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 the mealy i had looked very similar to pigeon mans cock bird and was the sire of my very first winner, although he himself was a poor racer.
Guest IB Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Yes you are right. There were plenty about in the 60s. But I will stick to my main point. Sion has been dead for so long that the idea of a strain of pigeon retaining anything of the qualities he selected for is ridiculous in the extreme. Was out of the game for over 30 years, Owen. Coming back, one of the things I noticed was all the 'strain' names being flown, and Sion wasn't one of them. I think they were consigned to history. Have handled one or two that put me in mind of them though.
andrew gooch Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 very good birds but i wonder if thay would perform the same in 2 days competition as were talking about birds that was about during the war & after.
Guest IB Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 mabee i am wrong but were dr andersons not brickoux sions kenny droog formerly of boness kept them Dr Anderson in his book talks about visiting and exchanging birds with some of the old names. These included Dr Bricoux and Paul Sion.
cemetary Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 mabee i am wrong but were dr andersons not brickoux sions kenny droog formerly of boness kept them A think he still has some of them left, i hear him talk lot aboot them.

They were until a few years ago also very big in Ireland have a few pedigrees with Irish fanciers names on I,m sure some of our Irish members know Alec Crawford, most of my birds are related to his red hen he called "Mona Lisa" which I believe flew the channel many times.

PIGEON_MAN Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 i think a mrs white from somerset advertises them, if i remember rightly her husband had a family of them and was a convoyer for woenrc (i maybe wrong) imet him when i was only 16 when he was convoying up here near me and he bred me some and brought them up when he came next , mainly mealies i think, he sadly died afew years back but his wife still has them Paul and Moira White are very good freinds of ours infact we still travel down to visit Moi whenever we can because as you say Paul sadly passed away some years ago,Moi had a sale acouple of years after Pauls death and now as no birds there at all,she infact raced them the season after Paul passed away and was quite sucessfull with them.Paul had probabley one of the largest studs of Sion pigeons in the UK and won many shows all over including best racer at Blackpool in his later years,he was also a Very big eyesign man and won many shows and judged many times right up into Scotland.I purchased a few of his birds at the above sale to go with birds that Paul had given me before he died and am now getting quite a few around me which I hope will do well in the channel races.
W.D. Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Dr.Anderson had birds from both Paul Sion and Dr.Bricoux, and even returned with birds for Dr.Bricoux after the war, when he had lost all of his,he mentions this in his book. The Sions are still doing a job today on the continent,Yves Van Der Pol from Belg has a line of these still scoring from Barcalona,he said in a moot that he needs them in his team for the hard ones from Barca. In France,Andre Coddeville, Hondeghem,(president of CALC,the distance club) has a loft full of them,he was 2nd nat from Barca a few years ago amongst others, the Natural Lofts bought some from him to add to theirs. There's also another frenchman, Christian Wittendal of Wattrelos near Lille who races only Sions, think he might have been loftman to Paul's son in his youth,he gave his birds a no. when they had scored from Barca,i.e. Barca 1,2,3 etc. he was in the hundreds last time they did a report on him!!! If you want to get some without looking too hard try the Natural Breeding Station,Antwerp,Belgium. Ask them why the Chinese buy them from them, they will tell you they are the ones that win in their 600 - 900 mile races.
