greenlands Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 THe run of the mill tests, cicci ,canker worms etc.Try Gary Spavin,Lancaster. or Kevin Winter,Sunderland. I've used Gary before no too sure on his price now but somewhere in the range of £3 a bird ,if that much. Lindsay

Lindsay hi lindsay..is that after an initial price for looking at the bird?....seems very cheap?
greenlands Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Hi Paul, no mate that's for test and diagnoses.I'll have a look at a post on anothers site ,I advised a lad from Manchester to go to Gary's and he was very impressed (just to make sure) Lindsay
Guest Owen Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I am not a Vet but I will test droppings for anyone living around the Pontypool/Cwmbran area.
Guest Owen Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Sorry, I missed a bit. If you have a microscope sitting on a shelf somewhere, I'll show you how to use it. That way you can test your own droppings so that you will know for sure where you are with the birds. If there are a few of you so much the better. We can look at the microscope in a group.

Lindsay ps If you can't make it to my house, Keto's in and her in doors makes cracking ginger bread.
Beanz Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Gary Spavin is your man, his charges last year were, £2 per droppings sample and £3 per swab, top man. I would definately not recommend Lizzy Rigby, unless you want to know what you haven't got not what you have got. Paul
dwh Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 thanks for the tip beanz on miss rigby only mentioned her cos ad seen her advertised in bhw but kevin winter from sunderland very good
OLDYELLOW Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 as the topic says vets neither Kevin Winters nor Gary Spavin are vets , and you would need to visit a good avian vet to get pescription only medicines , most ailments are spectrum specific treat with the wrong thing you could be creating the ideal enviroment within the host bird for these ailments to get far worse , a good avian vet is worth there weight in gold
Guest strapper Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I am not a Vet but I will test droppings for anyone living around the Pontypool/Cwmbran area. owen yove opedn up the door now...ur have them queing like a the january sales ;D ;D ;D.
Beanz Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I agee in principle old yellow but Gary has never let me down, everything is done on a screen for you to see, however there are very few vets that know anything about pigeons, when Lizzy came on the scene I thought at last someone who knows but after spending hard earned cash, she told me zilch and just gave me baytril because she admitted she did not know what it was and Baytril clears most things, these are vets we can do without, also Gary has been in pigeons a long time and knows what he is on about, he took over from Ray Ingram and had a long apprenticeship with Ray, about 20 years I believe. So if the choice is Gary or Vets like Lizzy its Gary every time for me. Paul

Paul the point is this most over counter percriptions are weaker than what a vet could give you , yes i agree that both kevin winters and gary spavin may well be knowledgeable but they arent vets and some vets wont do the proper tests and give something broad spectrum when not neccesary , if a vets worth there salt most will be recommended by others
greenlands Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Hi OLDYELLOW,I agree with were you're coming from, living in the backwoods of the UK . where does anyone in Cumbria find an avian vet, the lads round here have tried like myself and just about end up telling the vet what's what.Gary's never let any of the lads that I know down, the all point of the exercise is to find out what the problem is,after that it's upto the fancier which road to go down. Lindsay.
Beanz Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I have seen very few recommendations for vets from pigeon men, most get their stuff under the counter or from people who have been to Belgium or from the net the only decent ones are the ones who are fanciers thereselves but the cost is still out of reach of some fanciers, especially with all the things that are being treated for, people are giving this that and the other from various sources and we end up with the breakdown of pigeons immune systems and massive losses, a lot of birds have no immune system any more when they are out they pick up everything and don't survive. Paul
greenlands Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 hi lindsay..is that after an initial price for looking at the bird?....seems very cheap? Hi Paul just had a pm from the lad I was talikng about, see below. "Hiya mate, if memory serves me correctly i think he charged about £3 per bird for crop and vent swabs, the results he gives you there and then. I left droppings with him and he asks you to ring him a few days later and i think he charged about £2 per bird. For 6 YBs he charged me in total about £25 i think, which was so reasonable I gave him £30, which is why I cant remember the exact charges. any problems give me a ring ." The only thing I've removed is his name and tel.number. Lindsay
sharpy Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 libby harrison at retford poultry top avian vet knows what she is talking about
