REDCHEQHEN Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 I still have some youngsters with 3 and 4 flights to go (I can't get buttermilk where I live ) whereas my old birds are either through the moult or on their last flight Any tips??
pigeonpete Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 i know buttermilk is sold in tescos? so would they not have it? blue and cream container :-)
whiteknight Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 To many fanciers make to much fuss over the moult ive seen a bird win three firsts on the trot against top widowhood flyers with four nest flights :-/.
pigeonpete Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 This is how i was told to make butter milk :-)Take about 1 cup of whole milk, and then add about 1/4 cup of white vinegar to it. Let it stand about 1/2 hour. Instant butter milk.
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 i know buttermilk is sold in tescos? so would they not have it? blue and cream container :-) the nrearest Tescos that stock it is 15 miles away
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 extend the light and give warm baths. what will this do to the birds that are already through the moult? Old birds and 'young' birds are mixed
pjc Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 it won't effect the old birds but will encourage the yb's to continue moulting unless they have already stopped.

REDCHEQHEN Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 it won't effect the old birds but will encourage the yb's to continue moulting unless they have already stopped. they haven't stopped moulting, plenty of feathers to clean out this morning how many hours do I need to extend daylight, all the sections have got lights in except one (and that has got the old stock hens in so that won't matter anyway)
Tony C Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 If its any consolation RCH mine are exactly the same, not going to hit the panic button just yet.
PIGEON_MAN Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 This is how i was told to make butter milk :-)Take about 1 cup of whole milk, and then add about 1/4 cup of white vinegar to it. Let it stand about 1/2 hour. Instant butter milk. Woman in our local health shop told me 1 pint of milk to a tablespoon (I think) of cream of tartar, but I managed to find a shop that sold it,used it for quit a few weeks but couldn,t really see it was making any difference, not bothered with it since.
Tony C Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 As far as I'm aware buttermilk is supposed to help kick start the body moult, dont think it assists in any way on the growing of their last primary flights any quicker.

steve d Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 I still have some youngsters with 3 and 4 flights to go (I can't get buttermilk where I live ) whereas my old birds are either through the moult or on their last flight Any tips?? Best tip I will give you is dont panic, my own are the same and always have been this time of the year, they will moult through ok. I just feed to appetite with a good moulting mix and 3 baths a week with grit 2 times a week.
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 I bet ive seen more birds win which of had a full moult than what carry nest flights we've never had any luck with yearlings carrying nest flights, and don't know anybody who has
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 only birds i have which carry nest flights are late breds for stock purposes . if your darkness birds are carrying nestflights as yearlings i take it you havent mastered the darkness system yet !!!
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 You could be right ROCKYandRAMBO
pjc Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 if they are still moulting don't panic but you could increase daylight by an hour just to stop the moult halting.
