REDCHEQHEN Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 thanks its just that it said in the recipe oatmeal so i thought the ground up one ....pete you add water and then dry out - it goes mouldy if not dried properly - would imagine porridge would be hard to dry out
Guest strapper Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 what i do is put an oil on the corn and sprinkle the stuff over it and mix. tried it with the recipe but they didnt eat it.
Guest bigjohnwadd Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 Hello Peter,i just give pumping oldbirds asda`s value oats at57p a kilo, with whatever you need to put on it,you do not need to stick regimental to old hands recipe,as he was usually wrong about most things he every wrote about(i mean original mr Bishop)once they get used to it,they love it,not really sure if it oats really helps youngbirds who really need protein in the form of peas-beans tares ect,but i thing i have noticed over the years breeding wise, fat in the diet alongside protein seems to produce beautiful soft silky feathered youngbirds. Another thing i have noticed, whilst bringing up youngsters myself from5 days old until 18-21 days weaning, main ideal is to create silly tame caracter in the birds, but when hand feeding total peanut feed, the youngsters have most beautiful bodyand feather(like kind of thicker)you could ever wish for. Hope this helps
Guest peter.j Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 you add water and then dry out - it goes mouldy if not dried properly - would imagine porridge would be hard to dry out 2lb pinhead oatmeal 1 tbspn salt 2tbspn cod liver oil 4 desert spoon calcium concentrate 3 tbspn granulated or icing sugar 6 brewers yeast tabs crushed 4 tbspn milk this is a copy of the recipe with it having the milk would it still need the water added.....y.i.s pete

Recipe on the side of the jar of fortified calcium is as follows: 1. Dissolve 2 tablespoons of sugar in ¼ pint of boiling water and allow to cool 2. Place 2lbs of pinhead oatmeal or groats in a bowl, add 2 dessertspons of fortified calcium, 1 tablespoon of cod liver oil and the above mentioned sugar/water. Mix thoroughly and stand overnight

As the off season approaches there is scope to experiment and visit supermarkets and Holland and Barrets looing for additives to the basic formula. Yes I stopped using it when it went mouldy.

Guest bigjohnwadd Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 Here`s original 1970`s receipe out gazette studbook:-------- Place2lb ofcoarse oatmeal in a mixing bowl and stir vigorously while adding4 tablespoonfuls of milk,1 of salt,2 fortifiedcalcium concentrate ,3 of sugarand 2 of cod-liver-oil,then add six crushed vit tablets(nowadays multi i suppose not just vit a) note mixture will be oily,so dry off by adding small quantities ofordinaryflour and stirring as yougo until mix is qutte dry. The Golden Boost was basically worked out to help the good old "ALL BEAN "feed which has stood the test of time in britian since racing began, mostly because the birds can work on beans alone, but will never have the power to win, that`s where some variation of working the fat into them closer to the big one comes in.

magpie Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 Stuff to use is coarse oatmeal from Holland and Barrett which is about the same size as the chopped up wheat which forms the base for Harkers Hormoform. It's only a base for the other ingredients which soak into it. I have added wheatgerm oil,(do you think pigeons would naturally choose to eat a fish oil ?) vitaminerals and then dried it off with brewers yeast which you can also get cheaply from H and B. If they won't eat it at first try and few drops of aniseed oil. I generally give them a little as a supplement when they are feeding young but once they are racing it's back to just good corn.
