If you were making up your own widowhood mix what would it consist of  and what percentage of each thing would you put in ?

At this time of the year I feed best quality feed barley. All they want. As barley is inclined to dry the feathers, I mix a lttle linseed oil into it to counteract the drying affect.

When you come closer to racing you should feed a high carb mix. You need several differant types of maize and plenty of light grain.

I know some will argue with this, but, I do not like anything with a brown skin for widowhood cocks. I lke to feed high energy carb rich feed from Wednesday on, again all they want. Regardless of what anyone tells you, do not have them hungry, ever.

hi Owen Why linseed oil its only any good for strengthing wood oilseeds are better as seeds,  linseed looses its qualities when made into an oil

[edit] Nutritional supplement

Food-grade flaxseed oil is cold-pressed, obtained without solvent extraction, and marketed as edible flaxseed oil. Fresh, refrigerated and unprocessed, linseed oil is used as a nutritional supplement. It contains the highest level of omega-3 fatty acids among vegetable oils[3], especially alpha-linolenic acid, which may be beneficial for reducing inflammation leading to atherosclerosis,[4] preventing heart disease and arrhythmia,[5] and is required for normal infant development.[6] However, recent well-controlled placebo studies suggest that regular consumption of flaxseed oil may not reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, or cancer any greater than placebo.[7] Regular flaxseed oil contains between 52 and 63% alpha linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3). Plant breeders have developed flaxseed with higher alpha linoleic acid content (70%) and very low alpha linolenic acid content (< 3%).[8] The USFDA granted GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status for high alpha linolenic flaxseed oil.[9]

Although flax seeds themselves contain lignans, a class of phytoestrogens considered to have antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties,[10][11][12] the extracted linseed oil does not contain the lignans found in flax seed,[10] and therefore does not have the same antioxidant properties. In fact, flax seed oil is easily oxidized, and rapidly becomes rancid with an unpleasant odor unless refrigerated. Even when kept under cool conditions it has a shelf life of only a few weeks.[13][14] Oil with an unpleasant or rancid odour should be discarded. Rancid oils contribute to the formation of free radicals and may be carcinogenic.[15][16][17] Oxidation of flax seed oil is major commercial concern, and antioxidants may be added to prevent rancidification.[18]

May have adverse effect due to its content of neurotoxic cyanogen glycosides and immuno-suppressive cyclic nonapeptides.[19]

i used to just mix a few w/hood mixes together, i,e french maize, cinc, maize [cant spell it ;D], dog tooth maize etc,, kept it simple,, worked for me :),, any distance candidates were fed the same mix,, but a galley pot of maples in their nest box, then just  a few peanuts nearer the time, i found it more important to fly am and pm,, ,, with complete rest in between :)

When I wrote about my way of feeding my cocks, I probably should have said that when I use linseed oil and apple cider vinegar, it is only in small amounts. I believe that feeding supliments on a certain day of the week is detrimental to the birds. I never use vitamins except as a way of helping them get over the typhoid jabs in October. I think it is a fallacy to think that pigeon racing is all about diet. It is a heck of a lot more than that. Success probably has more to do with the loft design and the quality of the birds than diet. And even then, assuming you have really good birds in a well designed loft, you still have to train them properly. And by training I do not mean bunging them into a basket and releasing them somewhere every couple of days.

i use add herb on the corn 5 days, sedochol 2 days , in the water i add a iron /iodine tonice once a week thats all

the add herb does keep the feathers in nice condition, tried most things but this is the only one which i have seen a difference with

Id just use a widowhood mix, and maybe add bit a barley and prefer the ones with lesser maize in.

I've never had a go at making my own w/hood mix but If I did I would give something like this a go

45% maize

10% barley

15% wheat

10% white peas

10% white dari

10% safflower
