Only allowed my birds to nest on the floor once, back when I was a teenager. Pair sat & youngsters hatched no problem. When the youngsters feather-up, parents don't sit them all the time and one day found them uncovered and scalped, heads twice normal size. Not a nice job disposing of youngsters that age. Never again. That's what nest boxes are for, and that's where mine lay and rear their young.

I depends on if they are breeders or racers. if they are breeders then i have no issues but i wouldnt let a widowhood cock nest on the floor, his space is his box, and he has to fight for that box, thats what hes returning home for, by rearing in that box it cements that bond, allowing them to nest elsewhere is a no no for me.

in my own loft squekers that are on the floor get pecked by some adult birds that is the only problem i have ever had  i allow my birds to nest where ever they want only the ones i want to pair of i pen them up away from the others i have bred my birds like this for over 30years and would not change so i would let them go ahead on the floor,

I would make sure that they nest in a box. I have found that nesting on the floor is nothing but trouble. As IB has said they can get scalped and there is all sorts of problems with territorial disputes. And if they are racing pigeons, as holmside lofts has told you, you will need them to fly to the box. Some Fanciers will allow it, but I would not, because you need the control of having them identify the boxes as their home. I think this especially important with your yearlings. It is a bad idea to start them off in this way because you may find that once the habit becomes ingrained you will not be able to stop it.

had a pair on the floor, they had 2 ybs, went to blackppol show, came back and the 2 young birds were beheaded, dirty rat got in a 10 mil gap under the door, so i locked the pair in a nest box then, and she has laid again, so not too bad

I get 'another' kind of problem in the YB end when mature YBs pair up and try to nest in the deep litter; they claim the floor, stop the other youngsters going to the feeder,  and cause general chaos in there - until I move them through to OB end, and give them a box. That's also one pair settled in early for the following year.   :)

in my opinion, there,s for,s and against here,, as the back posts suggest , but a cock that has reared yb,s on the floor can take over the floor after this,, this could be used in  the motivation game , if worked on very carefully, , but could proove stressfull for other  birds in the loft,, the one thing to watch for is when the parents are driving for the second nest,, the yb,s on the floor could well be damaged ,, by other cocks,,, i would put a small box down with nest pan in,, off the floor  slightly,,making sure they cant nest underneath it,,,the cock should perch, on top of this box ,, off course the box could be turned   when not in use, then turned round again  when needed for motivation

nesting on the floor could be a good motivation in the racing season . had apair with 1 youngster on floor 14 days old took the hen away 5 days befor the race when the cock was out flying put the hen back in to feed it then took away [ flyin nataural then ] sent the cock to race national 1st section in a very hard race vel 600 10 hour fly .

I race my y/birds nesting in the easibed on the floor, move their nests nearer to eachother as the week goes on.

You will see a nest begining to be built.Rag it if they come back and build again rag it again. They will go back to there nest box.In the racing loft it is a bad president to set allowing this to go on.Even in the stock loft you will find they build beside the door its bloody murder.
