Guest Basin View Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Club shows are not far away...usual rivalry, always comments on the winning birds both for and against, judges decisions questioned, etc. For disscussion...what would you do if judging and you were met with the scenario below, what comments do you think you would recieve after the winning cards were put on the pens, etc. "You have a handling class of 40 birds to judge at a local show, as you progressed through the birds you find that there are only 3 birds you have put 5 stars against, looks like your first 3. When you go back to them you notice they are double rung with a continental ring and a breeders specific ring. ( Eg. Belge ring and a Natural breeding station ring ) Now do you go with the 1st, 2nd & 3rd having the 2 rings, obviously bought in birds probably entered by the same fancier. Do you have second thoughts at the possible comments that could be made regarding your selection and pick a couple of your 4 star selections and place in between the original three to avoid any adverse comments" Comments appreciated, please note this is a scenario and not based on any actual situation I know of.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Wouldn't be interested on a couple of rings on the birds . If they fit the bill I would give them the place they deserve
kev43 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 wud it matter if it had 10 rings on long as u get 1st 2nd 3rd then thats it 4 me
Guest Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 you have made your selection ,put the card on the pen . if you have doubts about your judgement or what people might say about youre selection ??? .................. then take up knitting ,apparently its quite relaxing , andy.
Guest Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 As long as the rings are transferred into the owners name, I wouldn't take any notice of the rings and judge the bird on its merits. Many birds are raced having been transferred from another fancier, should that not be allowed to take a card in a race? Therefore the same scenario applies in the show pen.
pjc Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 best birds should win, its often the case at club shows that 1 member takes a few cards as the birds will stand out to the judge. When judgeing a show at any level you will only ever please 2 people, the winner and yourself knowing you have put the best bird in your opinion in 1st place!.
PIGEON_MAN Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Wouldn't be interested on a couple of rings on the birds . If they fit the bill I would give them the place they deserve Would agree with the above, the people who are running the show should stipulate when the birds are entered weather or not any other ring should be left on the bird, shouldnt be the judges responsability to mark the bird down.
jonny Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 ive judged fancy birds before coming into racing I always gave the best bird on the day the card, heard whispers that i favoured one guy but his birds were the best on the day more often than not , you can only judge the birds put down to you regardless of origin
kirky Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 wud it matter if it had 10 rings on long as u get 1st 2nd 3rd then thats it 4 me same for me would not matter what ring or rings it had on.
PIGEON_MAN Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Personally I dont even leave the ets ring on a bird that I,m entering into a show.
Guest kev d Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 over the years ive judged a few shows , club shows and and the shows ive judged always says just the one ring on the bird no other rings are allowed on the bird but i dont know if that goes for all other shows .
Guest BRYANBROCK Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 when judging you should judge birds not rings so in my opinion thats all you need to know if the bird has what you think is right give it a card if not leave alone ;)
Guest kev d Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 if the show is done right they should tell you before hand no more than one ring on the bird to stop arguments like this .
pjc Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 personaly i wouldn't put a bird in a club show with any kind of marker ring etc on as some judges will walk past them incase they get blamed or acused of picking a certain members birds out and easy to find because its marked!
PIGEON_MAN Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 when judging you should judge birds not rings so in my opinion thats all you need to know if the bird has what you think is right give it a card if not leave alone ;) I think the problem is if people leave name and address rings on and judges give cards to these birds the people who dont win soon start saying the judge knew who,s bird it was etc etc and it soon causes trouble, except for the life ring I personally think all other rings should be removed when showing, saves hassle afterwards.
pjc Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 When organising club shows i'll walk around the birds before judgeing and if i see any markers i will ask the owner to remove them before judgeing, again it reduces conflict afterwards.
Guest BRYANBROCK Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 yes i agree with that statment that the name & address rings be removed but surely not e.t.s.rings but the organisers of the show sould make this clear when entry forms distrubuted wouldnt you agree
showman Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Have come across double rung birds a couple of times. Usually, when judging, I have a quick look down the class and check for such things. If I find a double rung bird, on this first pass, I simply inform the show secretary, who will generally accept that the bird should not be considered. I then commence judging proper.
PIGEON_MAN Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 yes i agree with that statment that the name & address rings be removed but surely not e.t.s.rings but the organisers of the show sould make this clear when entry forms distrubuted wouldnt you agree I always remove mine but it could be a problem if you get them mixed up and put them back on the wrong bird, just something I always do though.
mealybug Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 At some shows they ask for all rings to be taped up in case you recognise the number. I judged at a local show and the guy put a coloured pigeon in knowing I liked them. However on the day I gave the first three cards to the same fancier as his birds stood out a mile from the others. The first fancier then decided that I had gone with my Steward's choice and not my own!

The first fancier then decided that I had gone with my Steward's choice and not my own! That often happens! Back in the late 80's when I was asked to judge at the Monmouth open show at Pontypool I had been doing a lot of winning with a blue hen. At that time I was relatively unknown as I didn't do that many shows but the class I was judgeing had a very high proportion of blues in it, why because fanciers thought that was what i liked as that was the colour they associated with me when in fact I only had the 1 blue in the loft!

A simple solution to this is ALL competitors are given plastic "life ring" covers (same colour for ALL competitors) to put on their birds before penning, and after judging has taken place a steward removes these covers. All other plastic identification rings should be removed before penning. On the bigger shows this should be stipulated on the entry form. This will help to eliminate all these problems.
blaz Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 i was going to show some of mine.but my birds are that fast you cant get a good look at them even in a pen ;D ;D ;D
