showman Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 What in your opinion makes a good show, and what would entice you to attend ? Please vote for what is a priority in your view, if not a priority, don't vote for it.
Guest portmuffins Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 :o judged at night open first thing next morning to the public better travelling arrangements could be made birds uplifted earlier on 2nd day of shows 1230-1.00pm may suit far away travelers all shows should try to keep same dates each year so no double bookings.

pjc Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 good questions! prob with 2 day shows or penning/judgeing night before is in many cases you are forceing fanciers to have to pay for accomodation. Judgeing in the penning night would also mean the show having to pay accomodation for the judges.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Two day shows are a bit tying if you have commitments, the exception of course being Blackpool, but we love attending shows to meet up with friends you do not see that often for a good chat and just to catch up on things
showman Posted November 10, 2009 Author Report Posted November 10, 2009 Thanks PJC & Tammy_1 for comments. It will all go into the mixing pot !! Paul
pjc Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 are you planning to organise a show Paul? If so when and where?
Guest lenwadebob Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Haven't ticked any boxes as my reason is not there. For me the thing that makes a good show is the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new friendships.

showman Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 Haven't ticked any boxes as my reason is not there. For me the thing that makes a good show is the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new friendships. I understand what you say......but the social side of a show comes naturally from those attending. What I am looking for, is for fanciers to give an input that would help me, and other show organisers, so I can ascertain what would draw people to a show from an organisers point of view. At the Dunoon show we were always asking exhibitors what we could do to make the show better, and on more than one occasion we changed it accordingly. We place a high priority on what people want so we can make it better. By doing this, the show should attract more people, and your priority of meeting up with old friends and an opportunity to make new friends would naturally be in place .
abbeypap Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 What about the judges? Does it affect the entry of pigeons at a show if it's a judge known to prefer a certain strain / type / colour of pigeon?
pjc Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 What about the judges? Does it affect the entry of pigeons at a show if it's a judge known to prefer a certain strain / type / colour of pigeon? It does make a difference. Some will go to the show regardless of the judges and in many cases including Blackpool nobody knows who is judgeing what until they get there. What i'm not keen on is a show that has the same judges year in year out because it is easier than finding new judges. The change in RPRA rules has helped now fanciers are permitted to judge and show in the same show.

One of the hardest things to do is locate judges who are willing to travel, especially to far flung locations !!
pjc Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 The showmen arn't keen on racing men judgeing for some reason!
showman Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 The showmen arn't keen on racing men judgeing for some reason! On a couple of occasions we have engaged 'racing men' to judge show racer classes. If somebody complains about it, I simply point out that 'showmen' would not come to judge...that soon shuts 'em up !!
pjc Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 When anybody says anything to me about it I point out the performance's of the Monmouth SRS members current and past, Eddie Gale, Dave Shuttleworth, Ron McCarthy, Bert Hutchins, Norman Perry, Paul Rogers etc etc all winning major shows throughout the country and within the Monmouth SRS who nearly always use racing judges at the society club shows! A good racing man will pick a good Show Racer!
showman Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 Agreed, I have no problem using racing men to judge .
abbeypap Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Agreed, I have no problem using racing men to judge . Hope you don't mind questions about judges, but where do you get your judges names from? Is there a register or do club members put names forward, how do you become a judge? Do you have to attend a seminar on judging, or just have an interest in the conformation, construction and function of the pigeon. Where can you read the rules and regulations related to showing. Would be interesting to compare it to how we show and judge dogs.
Shortcut Lofts Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Judges are a grey area for me, that is why i only compete at the 3 big shows here and Blackpool. I no longer do club shows or christmas shows with the exception of 1 where i bring my YBs out for a first time. It is common knowledge that some well known showmen here go out of their way to find out who is judging particular shows then invite them to their lofts a week prior to the show to view their birds and then off course go to the show and clean it. I also think that all major shows should verify all the pigeons entered as this is not happening, even at Blackpool! Shows should be fair to all competetors across the board. Some pigeons have won racing classes at Blackpool the last 3 years and have not flown out of the loft - fact. Shows are a great oppertunity for fanciers to meet up and also for guys who work hard to condition their birds and show them off with the hope of winning, but it must be fair.
