    What Chance?

There's nothing more than I'd like than to post all the details up, however at this time it just isnt possible. The decision wasnt taken lightly, just as any decision like this isnt. I'm afraid I will have to ask everyone to trust me on this one, until such time that I can post more details.
  8. As I've said before I'm not going to publicly comment on any member, violation or conduct. I can assure members that this decision wasn't taken frivolously.
  9. Did a quick google and it seems to be a hoax, see: - http://antivirus.about.com/od/emailhoaxes/p/postcard.htm - http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_postcard_virus.htm But better safe than sorry, never open any email attachment that is sent to you by someone you dont know, or without knowing what it is.
  10. OldYellow won it, the topic is on the 'Introductions & Member Messages' board.

I think we're getting away from the original question and everything has been answered. Therefore I'll take Vallance's suggestion and put this one to bed (and myself ).

As I said I dont post publically about warnings, bans and the like. But it is my opinion that no ban should be forever.

Mods dont have access to the web server so the only PMs they can read are their own. I haven't seen any such admission but if one does exist, its false because it isnt possible.

Amar wasn't banned for asking about his PMs going missing. It was an entirely different matter, but as I've said before I dont post publicly about member conduct, warnings and bans.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean but I'll have a go When I send a PM to you it gets saved to my server PM file (if I tick the option to save it), and your server PM file. If Joe Bloggs sends you a PM at exactly the same time there is the possibility of a conflict of two instances trying to access and write to your server PM file. Sending a PM is when the storage takes place

The only reason I can think of would be if it was police or legal requirement. Obviously I dont want that to happen in the first place

I've never had that reported to me from the people involved, I have seen one or two posts about something like that though. Without more details of the actual cases I can only come up with the following reason that would be possible. If there is a conflict or other problem when your PM file is being written to by the server the file or parts of the file may be truncated. I've never known this to happen on Pigeonbasics, but I have heard of it happening on other servers, so it is possible. The only other issue with the PM system that I can think of is an issue when two PMs are received at exactly the same time. You see that /m-1231276616/ in the address bar? That is actually an epoch time stamp. If two messages have the same epoch it is possible that they could overlap or overwrite one another. Again this is very rare (messages would have to be received within the same second) and I've never seen an instance of it happening on Pigeonbasics. Both of these things are so rare that the likelyhood of them happening is almost zero, and even if/when they do there may a mechanism that I am not aware that the forum script uses to handle the situation. If you think anything isnt working quite right, just let me know and I'll look into it

I'm sure its possible with some kind of forum software out there, but with ours its exactly as I posted ^

I'll look for an extension to the forum software, but if there isnt one that is adequate I'll have to code one up myself, in which case it'll be after Blackpool

Firstly, I'm the only one with that level of access to the server. And nope, to date I've never had reason to do so.

No. Theoretically there is a way that it is possible that I could view anyones PMs. All the forum files are stored on the server, I have access to the server, and could view the files. No-one else could do this, because only I have access to the files on the server. The only reason that I would do this would be if there were some legal or equally serious circumstance where I had no option than to. Regardless of the fact that associating a member name to their member number, and the relevant file on the server wouldnt be the easiest/quickest thing to do. I've seen this question crop up a few times in the past few weeks, I cannot stress enough that when I log in to the forum I only have access to my own PMs (like everyone else). Have a look over my shoulder at Blackpool (if we can get a signal) if you like
