The victim's family has been informed of the death. A spokesman for Task Force Helmand said the soldier was helping "to provide a safe and secure environment for the local population, when he was hit by an explosion" A total of 350 UK military personnel have now died since operations in Afghanistan began in 2001. Some 309 of them were killed as a result of hostile action. A further 41 are known to have died either as a result of illness, non-combat injuries or accidents.

A LOFT full of racing pigeons was torched in a deliberate attack on a village allotment. Firefighters from Aston Fire Station were called to the loft, on land off Alexandra Road, Swallownest, at around 3.30am this morning. Although they were able to extinguish the flames the fire was so extensive there was no way of discovering how many birds had been killed. A fire brigade spokesman said: “There was no way of counting the birds. The fire had destroyed so much of the building.” Firefighters attempted to find the owner of the loft while fighting the fire but found the Alexandra Road allotments deserted. The spokesman added: “Someone is going to have a terrible shock when they discover the damage this morning.” Firefighters recorded the incident as “deliberate” and the police have been called in to investigate.

Andy Gray sacked by Sky for offensive behaviour Sky has sacked football presenter Andy Gray after further allegations of sexist behaviour came to light. The pundit had already been disciplined for sexist comments made about female referee Sian Massey before Saturday's match between Wolves and Liverpool. The 55-year-old and colleague Richard Keys were stood down for Monday's match between Bolton and Chelsea. Sky Sports said it had sacked Gray "in response to new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour". Sky's statement continued: "The new evidence, relating to an off-air incident that took place in December, 2010, came to light after Andy Gray had already been subjected to disciplinary action for his comments of 22 January, 2011."
