Got your priorities wrong there mate all that should have been done before you even thought about having the house lol.Whenwe moved to ours the only thing i was concerned about was if the garden was big enough for the birds, looked at that first.
-
Have never realy bothered much about giving names to any of my birds but i do have one at the moment,he got his name like this,i went out one morning and left the birds out flying when i came back i noticed a pile of feathers on one side of the lawn, happened to look over the other side of the lawn to see a hawk on top of this pigeon pecking into it,s neck, well to cut a long story short he survived and as since gone on to take positions in the club, realy there was only one name for him Lucky.

Very good idea mate i would certainly stay perhaps after the show and watch something like that, thing is though i,m not so sure that some of these judges they pick would be capable of such a thing anyway,i have personelly travelled all over the country to eye sign shows and it really does make me wonder sometimes wether or not they know what their looking for, mind you if you were ever lucky enough to have gone to one of the shows that Bil Carney judged that was almost the same as you proposed, you were able to be in the room when he was judging and he would almost give a speech on every pigeon he judge even tell you what distance the pigeon would win at,wether it had worms or not etc etc etc, mind you i had my doubts sometimes about some of the stuff he use to come out with.

Hi Blackjack,i suppose we could see it coming but we were hoping that perhaps they might keep it open for the first couple of races,we still have 3 members left in our club and as i set the clocks for the classic i thought i would give it another year and see what happens, mind you i see in the propositions they are trying to cut the radius down in north section so it looks like they dont really want us anyway.Still you wont have to worry about any of that anymore. All the best mate.#

Longest flying pigeon into scotland in 2007 squills book is 1173 miles, flew from palamos to wick in 1976 belonged to Rosie and Bruce.
-
Looks like you got a differant time than anyone else mate perhaps thats the reason,i,m posting this at 9.45.
-
They all look good bargains if you go by pedigree,s and performances, but i would imagine that these birds will be used for stock perposes,so until they have actually bred winners themselves cant see how they can be bargain,s,only the one Wings mentioned.
-
Dave,if you go to the thread "ets yes or no"you will find a lot more imformation about costs etc.
-
Must say anthony it,s not something i have heard of.
-
I believe someone worked it out on the forum that you can just about pair up on the 30th of november and just get the rings on the youngsters in the beginning of january, personaly i cant see the point.
-
Paul are you going to be housing stock birds in this loft as well as the youngsters off them,or will all the birds be flying out.
-
ALBEAR,could you tell me what a map 1:50,000 scale is in inches to the mile,as the ones we are suppose to use are 1:10,560 which is 6 inches to the mile, does that make it better or worse in terms of accuracey,so long as the mark is in the right place of course.
-
Ben,as a young fancier i,m surprised you are against the ets surely with you still being at school you can see that as you have said above, everything is being taken over by computer,s and we must move forward, just out of interest what are your reasons for being against it.
-
Linda,What a excellent answear,i thought i was the only one who thought that way,if it was that easy to breed winners there would be no problems.
-
Carl,You could take the ets ring off when you send the bird to the race,or as you say put the rubber ring over top of ets ring,i would not think you would have to contact anyone to approve the latter as there are a lot of birds that have two rings on their legs,i myself have quite a few one leg the rpra ring the other leg a permanent ring with my telephone number on,the easiest way i find is to get the marker to place the rubber on top of the ring this makes it easy to remove when clocking in.
-
Andy, the only thing i can say to you if you are not happy with your loft location is ask the secretary if he will remark your loft for you,any decent secretary would do this i,m sure,it may even be an advantage to the rest of the members, especially if they find that you are flying longer than you should be.
-
ALBEAR,I agree with you the marking of someone,s loft with a needle cant be the best way with all the technollogy that is around now,but then again probable the fact that one transporter may be 20 or 30 yards up the field from another thats liberating birds in the same race is also a farce,as well as the liberater going by the time on his wrist watch which as probabley not been checked with tim when he liberate,s,so the fact that your distances may be out by a couple of yards is no more of a farce.the maps that we use in our club are 6 inches to the mile which i think are as stated by the rpra, not sure if that is smaller or larger than what you quote.I can remember buying some of these for the club for £6 each,I believe they are about 50-60 now.
-
Just a thought peckedhen,as Kev says white pigeons are a great favourite with children e.t.c.they could easily have cut the rings off.
-
Hi Phil, the show is advertised in the bhw nov.10th page 165 but just in case you dont get the bhw the show is on at the tipton sports academy on dec.10th,it,s being run by the midland show racer society so most of the classes are for show birds but there are 8 classes for racers as well, entries to be in by 30th nov,£1.50 a bird,if you want to know any more details just pm me.
-
Sorry to have to correct you sean but gb 03 rings were green, but your right in saying 2007 rings will be white.
-
The remarking is usually done by the secretary of the club or another official,he basically takes the map to the fanciers house and usually along with the fancier they agree where the loft is suituated and then puts a needle through the map and then writes on the back the members name.the £2.50 is the cost the RPRA make for calculating the lat. and long.from the hole in the map.as for checking the accurasy well that is down to how accurate the secretary marks the map in the first place.
-
Hi Phil, yes i have allways been interested in eyesign must be close on 40 years now but dont ask me to explain anything to ya about it as i couldn,t,it is the only way that i select a bird for breeding is by the eye, performances or pedigrees dont matter to me if it asn,t got the eye, hoping to put a few in the show at tipton on the 10th dec allthough i must say differant judges have differant idea,s even with eyesign.
-
Weather or not gps is more accurate or not doesn,t come into it if you are governed by the rpra then you must go by their rules which states that all loft locations are to be calculated from ordnance survey,Redcheqhen if you are not happy with your distances i would ask your club secretary if he will remark your loft, this should only cost you £2.50 plus the postage for the return of the map.

I WOULD SAY HE AS A SUPER RACING EYE BUT SHOULD BREED THE GOODS IF YOU HAVE HIM PAIRED UP TO A GOOD BREEDING EYE.

Just looking at the voting i see that someone starts their youngsters off at 28 miles, was wondering if the person would give us some more imformation on this and how they do racing.
