I read somewhere (and I can't find it again now) that they used copper wire on top of the lofts and this somehow helped the birds to home when the loft was constantly on the move.

Last week a member of this forum accepted my offer of one of my pigeons - he said that he'd sort Amtrak for Monday. I waited in all day Monday and most of today. The shpping hasn't been done and the dog not walked! Amtrak never arrived and, despite this member being online several times, he has not responded to my PMs. So, I guess he no longer wants the bird :-/. Whatever happened to common courtesy? > > >

I'm not near Fife but, can breed some for you next year. You just pay postage.

Thanks everyone. Sue :K)

Thanks Andrew. You've set me off on the right footing - I've been searching the web to find out about them. It was the thread about 'milers' that got me to thinking and wondering -so many different varieties and sports with the pigeon! Sue :K)
-
I cut up one clove into a gallon of water and leave it for no more than two days. I think you will need to freeze your 'mixture' or the garlic will go off.
-
YES!! Thanks Andrew that's what it was. Are they still flown now or, was it a long time ago?

Please can someone remind me what those tall lofts are called, which folks in Scotland have? Do they try to temp other peoples birds into their loft? What sort of pigeons are they? I know I've read about this somewhere but I can't remember and it's really bugging me!! >

Oh! Sorry I missed it - laptop problems!! Belated Birthday Wishes. Hope you had a great day Sue :K) :K) :K)

The National Pigeon Association has a list of breeders of garden fantails. Contact Secretary Tracey Edwards Email: tracey@edwardspm.fsnet.co.uk

I have one of each. The brick one is cool in summer but damp in winter (single skin), the wood one is hot in summer (but, there again, everywhere was hot this summer) I think that it will be warmer and drier than brick in winter.

I'm not sure really. She has lost weight - keel very sharp, is very weak but can stand on her own and fly up to a perch . She has eaten and drunk very little - I thought she would have drunk loads! :-/ I really don't have enough experience to judge how she is. A fancier friend will be able to look at her tomorrow. Thanks for asking. :K)

GOT IT!!! ;) The sweep came this morning and gently brought it down with the brush. It's very weak but, I've given it water with a bit of salt and honey in. Poor thing - I had to bathe it's eyes open and have given it as much of a bath as I dared. It's now in a closed nest box with food and water so it can see the others but they can't peck it. :-/ Here's a photo - bear in mind that it is (or rather was) a pure white bird! THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR ADVICE/SUPPORT. Keep your fingers crossed that it makes it now. ps The chimney is now capped!!
-
Not too long then. Thanks
-
How long were they in Westy? Did they come down or get out of the top? I'm sure mine can't go up or it would have done by now...just hope it survives till tomorrow.
-
Well, the poor thing is still hanging in there...I can't leave it any longer - a chimney sweep is coming first thing in the morning and, if bringing it down suffocates it, at least it puts an end to it's suffering - it must be terribly dehydrated and hasn't eaten since Sunday. :'( :'(
-
Yes, definitely. I've even put a plastic bag over me hair and stuck me head right up the chimney as far as I could. ;D I can get my arm up the to first shelf and he's not on there. Thanks anyway. :K)

Hmm, just had phone call from RSPCA, don't know when they'll get to me but advise me to put some food and a bright light in fireplace and the pigeon will come down. They have no way of getting the bird unless they can reach it by hand up the chimney!! She assured me the bird will come down...yeah but, I want it down alive!! Chocolate fireguard springs to mind!! :-/

Happy Bithday to you Happy Birthday to you Just be glad you can't hear me singing this!! ;D ;D Have a great day. Sue :K)

I rang the RSPCA , they are coming to rescue the bird today - I'll let you know the outcome.

Amazing photos of the fire brigade - I was going to phone them but, 'he who thinks he should be obeyed' put his foot down (He's afraid it'll cost him! >) Well, fingers crossed the bird comes down tomorrow. I'd tried rattling the feed can but it didn't work and just now pouring some water. The fireplace is open but, after the mess of all the fallen soot this morning, I've taped newsaper over the opening. :-/ I'll definitely get the chimney capped after this - talk about shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted!! :
-
Thanks everyone. Yep, the bird is definitely in the chimney - some droppings and feathers as evidence!! I've tried two sweeps with no luck. It is an open fire so the gas board isn't applicable. Not sure what my next move is!! If it doesn't come down it's going to have a slow death! :'(
-
I surely can't be the first this has happened to - I'm pretty sure that one of my young birds has fallen down the chimney! I was one short last night after loft flying and this morning I've come down to soot everywhere! How on earth do I get it out? I can't see up the chimney - it's not a wide one so don't know if the bird is near the top or lower down. If I got a chimney sweep would the brush push it back up? Would the fire brigade help? HELP!!

An old fancier told me to give elderberries to my birds last year, I tried but they were not interested in them so, I crushed some in their water. Boiling would destroy the vitamins in them!!
