  2. I was walking past the vets yesterday and saw a group of various wild birds in a line, I asked them what they were waiting on only to be told, we are waiting on this Avian vet, he seems to know better than Mother Nature on how to keep us healthy, Then I heard a voice say, "Here have a cuppa you were in another world, what were you dreaming about?" When not dreaming, I often look at the wild birds in the countryside and marvel at there health, no medication and no vets, only survival of the fittest and no young bird sickness!
  3. Missed by the lads, he is in a better place now.

    Wanted

I have had a request from a fit 77 year old who has a passion for powder blue bars. He is desperate to get 3 pairs which may have been ex racers or show birds, that you may have surplus, these birds are for his own pleasure and not to race or show. He has an aviary and good accommodation for the birds he is looking for something to keep him busy during his retirement. His name is Jim Bathgate from Loghgelly phone number 01592 781119. Jim kept budgies for years and was a friend of the late Dave Reid and recalls the lovely blue bars he had. Jim will be happy to pay carriage etc. THANKS FROM JIM FOR THE QUALITY BIRDS HE RECEIVED FROM BASICS LADS.

  11. Birds do have a sense of taste, but it is not well refined, very few taste buds compared to us.
  12. Pigeons need a lot of calcium to create good, hard shells, so most incidences of shell-less eggs are related to not having enough calcium in the diet. Young hens may lay a shell-less egg before they begin to lay eggs for the first time, If they are on a proper diet and have grit, minerals, they should have all the calcium they need. They also need Vitamin D and a proper balance of other vitamins so they can process the calcium.
  13. Yes observation and good hygiene I had 100 hens 1,000 turkeys cows goats horses etc pigeons on open bowl no problem.
  14. Blood stains on egg shells occur most frequently with young birds,or yearlings though it can happen with any age bird, the shell is stained when small blood vessels that line the oviduct rupture when an egg passes through no worry as a healthy pigeon will heal very quickly.
  15. Matterne x Imbrecht.

  17. Thank you for your reply, I would like to point out that the fancier who applied to join this club informed me directly that he was only told his application was unsuccessful and no reason or mention of boundaries were given to him.
  18. Yes, certain doo men are killing the game. just heard that Grangemouth Homing Society have turned down a potential new member, no reason given. The new guy is moving into their area and has flown pigeons for 60 years. At their AGM 4 members turned up 2 voted for and 2 against, the president had the deciding vote - this seems very hard when we are trying to encourage people into the sport. Perhaps someone from the Grangemouth Homing Society can give a reason for this or maybe even reconsider this decision.
  19. I have had no notification of this which caused mayhem last year. same scenario? hope not.
  20. Thanks lads hope you had a good one Fletch,The wife gave me a nice card that said relax put your feet up etc, 10 minutes later she said Thats a van at the door with a wee shed I ordered,It wont take long to get that built,It will fit in a wee corner for your odds and ends.3hrs later she said, I told you it wouldn't take long, fancy a run in to the toon. Birthday whose birthday.
  21. Thanks to Paul Morrison for returning stray and keeping me updated.
  22. Well done Rory
  23. Update. Bird was in fact a sparrowhawk which sat on a perch in the back garden lady owner said she thought it was a falcon until a friend told her otherwise.Yesterday while I was out she decided to let the bird have its liberty the bird flew around landed on a house then flew into a neighbours window breaking its neck. The lifeless body was then attacked by a group of crows. It seems you don't have to have any knowledge of birds or common sense to keep raptors.
  24. Yesterday the birds in our district were making such a racket that I went outside to see what was alarming them, the next door neighbour called me over to say that a new neighbour opposite had been out in the garden with a bird of prey. Any one any info on law regarding these please P.M.
