Had a Blakes loft for 8 odd years, no leaks, no problems, just creosoted every year. Mine came with traps so I extended landing board. Personally I would say value for money

Feather rot or mites - best treatment?

Blow torch is best weapon we have, but be carefull not to set loft alight.!!!! I would dip birds(plenty of dips available) then blow torch the whole set up. -

Other 09 bird, in a bit of a mess, flown out and bashed about by strong/gale force winds we have had down here. Be sound in a few days though. Just hope owner is willing to fetch or send for.

Cracking pics. mate. Love the *expletive removed* especially. Just lost Big Tony (pitt bulll) to cancer. Have Laguna Whippet now for rabbitting. Miss MY big dog Wholesale. Whish I could have one,as no loyaller (is that a word?) dog , than a heavy bull breed. Good luck with finding GOOD homes for the pups.

Antifreeeze is top draw. Best way is to make a paste with it and Digestive biscuits and peanut butter. Rats can also not resist fatty stuff like fried sausage, smoked fish skin or skin off boiled bacon

wee tips for novices
allenyeates replied to jimmy white's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Sunshine and fresh air--- Both are free. Clean water, if drawn from the tap leave over night to allow any chemicals to evaporate. Chemicals in drinking/tap water stop all your potions working!!! Stop throwing your hard earned away!! -
Busscheart?

Trying some White Comines. Solely for my grandaughter. Found them to be greedy things , eating more than my own distance youngsters. Hope the lure of the corn tin brings them home rapid!!!!
-
Thanks to those who replied to my quest for knowledge on the white comines. Good advice peterpau , think I,ll do the same cheers.

Have just bought 4 white comines from Natural Breeding Station for my Grandaughter. Nice looking squeakers but they will have to go on the road. Has anyone on here had expierence of these? What sort of distance have you had them from? They say sprint to middle but as I am more into distance pigeons (Southwells etc.) I am at abit of a loss. I like tough pigeons and would hate to lose the Grandaughters "pets" by pushing too hard. Any advice extremly welcome.

Would any of you lads in Eire be willing to try a pair of later bred Y.B.s from 2009 on the channel next year. They would be Southwell x Verrotte and I would like to place 2-3 pair. No cost just carriage. P.M. if interested. They are mainly very dark or black (hawks don,t like them!!!) Cheers Allen

Said it before on here and I,ll say it again.. The clue is in the name ..SPARROWhawk... This tells us that taking a bird of pigeon size is totaly against nature. Also the most dangerous time for pigeon fanciers is when there are LARGE young hawks in the nest as the hen can now leave them to hunt. It is the hen spar that mainly catches pigeons. Young spars need most feeding around( May_June) late spring hence the more persistant attacks on our nieve Y.B.s. The ONLY solution is removal of the offender and then continuose removal of any that fills its space( nature hates a void). They will take pigeons in flight exercising around the loft, but prefer ambush techniques. The reason that they now take our pigeons is that the species has reached plague proportions and there is not enough easy food( song birds) left anymore and also they have no fear of man. Remember the word SPARROW not pigeonhawk.... However to remove one permanantlly is not the hardest trick in the book.. Raptors sit on the bottom of the avian intelligence register. P.M. for more info.

Same happened here when my son went "urban hunting". We were left with ferrets. Now settled down with a young daughter he has returned to ferrets and is a agricultural pest controller. I myself was brought up rabbitting/hunting with dogs (lurchers and terriers) and ferrets. Brought my kids up the same and ferrets/dogs/pigeons certainly kept them out of trouble. Also teaches them respect for all animals and birds.(as well as well fed!!!!).
-
You would be lucky to get decent working ferrets this time of the year. we have 8 and work them solidly till end of Feb or early March depending on the weather. You could try your local free adds (addmart?) paper, but my advice would be to wait till summer and get some youngsters. At least that way you know what youve got!
