can anyone enlighten me on the difference between young bird sickness and circcovirus or are they one and the same.the mind boggles. :-/ :-/

sent you a pm.

what i had was a mild outbreak.originally i was told to quarantine for 30 days,i was lucky that it all cleared up as quickly as it started.the outbreak involved 3 stock birds and 5 late breds,i beleive quick action saved the day and a re-test has reveiled no pmv.all birds are now acting normally so i,m not going to argue with the experts,i,m just glad everythings back to normal.
-
that sounds like the start of what my birds had from your discription.look at the thread parymyxo outbreak.there are 3 illustrations on the thread and see if any match up with your birds droppings.paul

i have a new problem now.its a strange one and its affecting every bird in the loft.for some reason all their feathers are coming out, flights, tail feathers and body feathers also.

kids had plenty of bargains, but me no. ;D

hi all.here is another update on my paramyxo outbreak.this time its good news for a change.my birds have been randomly tested again by defra and the local vets and i had the results back today.the pmv virus has been totally eradicated from my loft and birds and all restrictions have been lifted.i let my birds out today for the first time in 2 weeks and they loved it.it was great to see them twisting and turning in the air, even though it was raining.the eight birds that originally came down with it are totally returned to health and there is not a wet dropping in the house.i was lucky,i lost only one bird to the virus a late bred squeaker,i think quick action by everyone averted a disaster.speacial thanks to paul(strapper)who,s advice was very welcomed(plus his shoulder to cry on) ;D.

that is correct paul, because of the strain on the birds internal organs while they are fighting the disease,to much medication can push things the other way.plus the fact that there is no quickfire cure for this disease.but i am seeing a definate improvement every day, there is only one bird that has loose droppings now and the others who came down with it are eating well again and seem generally happy in themselves.no other birds are showing symptoms.my defra advisor also told me that recent outbreaks that he has seen have been less severe than when the disease first got its grip in 1984.this could be a sign that our birds are becoming more resistant to the disease and that vaccination is working.we can but hope.

the only meds they are receiving are electrolytes in the drinking water to rehydrate them and they are also having vitamins a,b and c to give their immune systems a little boost.this is being given on the advice of the vets who are treating them for me.its only a mild out break but pmv is pmv,so i am keeping a very close eye on things.the fact that they had been vaccinated has probably stopped a major outbreak and loads of deaths.

hello.here is an update on my first week copeing with pmv.of the 8 birds originally affected(3old birds and 5 late breds)all are on the road to recovery,5 are now doing what i like to call monster turds and are no longer "squirting"the other 3 still have loose droppings but are now a slimy green colour.the rest of my birds are unaffected.i beleive that all these birds are going to make a full recovery and im so glad that i did not cull them as 2 were very expensive.none have displayed the nervous twisty thing.its all moving in the right direction.keeping my fingers crossed.
-
i,m dedicated to helping them recover.dont worry i wont give up,not after all the hard work that has gone into building the team.
-
another piece of information that i beleive is prudent to mention. the defra advisor told me that vaccinating your birds for pmv does not prevent them from catching the disease it only helps them to overcome it when they do catch it,the rest is down to the general fitness and health of the bird itself.so it turns out that they were vaccinated correctly which is why they have not all keeled over and are only displaying mild symptoms of the disease.

hello.my birds have now been examined by the vets who vaccinated them, funny thing as soon as i mentioned defra were involved they were here in a flash, knocking on my door at 9.00am this morning.according to the tests that have so far been carried out on 8 birds,3 have the paramixo virus present in their blood but they also have the antibody present as well which is why they are only displaying mild symptoms of the disease.which means that their immune systems have been weakened substantially, allowing other viruses to multiply(ie cocci etc).at this stage i have been told not to cull the affected birds as most of them will return to health and retain their sense of direction.the aim now is not to cure them but to help them overcome the disease.i must stress that no nervous disorders are present at this time only very loose droppings.the next thing now is to determine how the birds became affected.they have not been raced this season so i am assuming that the pmv virus was transmitted by one of the strays that have visited recently.i have reported 12 strays this season,10 have been picked up by their owners and 2 are awaiting their owners response.defra have taken the details of each of the reported birds owners i am assuming to do checks on these lofts also.it turns out that my birds were vaccinated correctly by the vets who did them which is why their symptoms are mild.all i can do now is wait and see what happens.culling is not neccesary at this stage.defra have told me that it would be a mistake to cull healthy valuable birds.

i will take you up on that offer paul,if there is a next season.i,m really angry as i feel that a year of breeding, training, team building has all been for nothing.they really have got some explaining to do,because at the moment i am blaming them for not vaccinating my birds correctly.i cant think of any other reason why this has happened.
-
to the vets not your place paul.
-
in fact i feel like going up there and setting fire to the place.
-
vaccinations were provided by marr, morris and kay locally known as fields veternary service.i will be contacting them tommorow to find out exactly what they used,i have certificates off them, but it appears they are worthless because as i have now discovered it did not work and i am very upset about it.
-
listen to this man his diagnoses was exactly right,do not let this happen to you,it can wipe your whole team in under a month.
-
allready done.thats who did the tests for me today.the affected birds are being culled tommorow and the rest are having emergency vaccination.though i dont see what good it will do as they were all done.old birds in april, youngsters in july but they still have it.
-
sorry for the delay,i have just been told that pmv is in my loft and i have trying to get my head around it since i spent nearly £500 vaccinating against this and other things which clearly has not worked.
-
maybe useing the word squirts was a little to over the top.the droppings are very watery but there is some substance to them.

bad news, wharever is going through my old birds has now reached my youngsters.a test revealed a very high cocci count in my old birds, which is what i have been treating them all for.today i noticed a few young birds with very wet droppings.they are exercising well though and i cant report any change in behaviour, appetite is good to.i have had quite a few different suggestions to what it might be,so now i am totally mystified again.it all started about 4 weeks ago when i noticed that a late bred squeaker was suffering with very very wet droppings,i immeadiately had the droppings tested, which was when i discovered the high cocci count it was suggested at the time that it had been passed to the youngster from the parent bird who was also suffering with wet droppings.i must stress that it involves a total of 8 birds which have been seperatred from the rest as a precaution.the youngster got worse and worse and died a week later,he got so weak that he could not feed or drink.the rest of the affected birds a mixture of old and young look like pictures and are feeding, acting and exercising normally.a freind has taken away samples of droppings and blood today to try to find out exactly what is going on,all i can do now is wait and see what the results are.as the problem is spreading i have confined all the birds to the loft.
-
do you want to borrow the wife she will nag them away. :X ;D
-
is anyone familiar with a treament for cocci called "sulphaquinoxaline sodium" to ba kept in the drinkers for 3 to 4 days.
-
i agree, seasons over for some, just let the birds rest and go through it at their own speed.they have earned it.
