yeh with hindsight bruno and tammy it probably wasnt the brightest thing to do calling the birds in with a hawk sitting nearby in a tree, but with the time approaching 5 pm and with the daylight fading i assumed the hawk was settling in the tree for the night and wanted to be sure that my birds were safely in my loft,me being a novice i panicked and worried that if my birds landed on the house roof they would be more at risk then if they landed on the loft roof which i had access to,anyway thanks for replying to my thread,im going to try the cd discs and see if they have any effect on them kev

yesterday while excercising my pigeons i watched a sparrowhawk fly straight over my loft ignoring the pigeons only to land in next doors 40ft pine tree scaring all the small birds away from the tree,it then sat in the tree while i ran around my garden like a headless chicken shaking the corn tin and whistling trying to get them in,after 10 mins or so i managed to get them all in but the hawk didnt seem interested in them even though they were flying straight past the tree and landing in front of him/her onto the loft roof, ive since been told that the hawk has been seen several times before landing in the tree but i cant understand why the hawk didnt attack my pigeons?? any ideas anyone-this is only about the second time ive seen a hawk but even though i was lucky yesterday im assuming the hawk will be back probably for my pigeons and would be grateful for any advice. ps ive kept them in today just to be on the safe side :-/

i got started after watching my brother race pigeons but he gave up, about 2 years later when i was about 11-12 years old i decided to start up on my own and me and some mates used to climb into the attics of the old derelict buildings in brighton and catch the stray racers which sometimes ended up with me being escorted home by the police but this didnt deter me as the pigeon bug had well and truly bitten,i carried on keeping pigeons for about another 5 years and then stopped when i moved into a flat,i restarted 2 years ago[aged 42] when me and my wife and kids moved into a house and i wouldnt be without them now[the wife, kids and pigeons] kev ;D

sorry to hear that your 2 birds didnt make it even after all the excellent care you gave them,at least they didnt suffer alone in the outside world,u can be proud of what u did.

give them a chance and see what happens before you condemn them? i know someone who was in your situation who thought his recently purchased yb,s were of inferior quality but then went on to race well with them and put some to stock.

thanks for advice speedwings but all my birds have just been sprayed with jonstons anti-mite spray and all seem to be clean of lice/mites, ive put dummy eggs in to replace the deserted eggs but neither the cock or hen is interested and have moved into a empty nestbox directly above their old one, this is the second time she has deserted her eggs after previously being an excellent mother to her youngsters, i will keep watching and hope i find whats wrong-ive placed her eggs under another hen who is sitting tight and am hoping for the best thanks again kev

hi i have a yearling who had a broken leg which was splinted and she now seems to be walking ok and putting weight on the leg but there is a hard lump about the size of a peanut where the break was.is this anything to worry about ?? she seems ok flying/landing but im wondering why she still has the lump about 8 months after the break-any ideas?? kev :-/

i think u may be asking for trouble if u dont get permission first but then if your neighbours are ok and your loft isnt an eyesore u may not have any problems with them? if birds are not left to run wild and are called straight in after excercise hopefully u should be ok regarding neighbours the only problems i have with neighbours are the ones who seem to like spooking the birds when im feeding them in or when they are having their bath, unfortunately some people just dont like pigeons anyway i wish u luck kev
