  1. Probably a daft question, but do you have many windows in your shed so that the birds could see outside?
  2. Not just in pigeon clubs! ;-)
  3. After a pretty awful day at work, I got home, let my massive team of birds out (2, LOL) and watched them have a fly around. Then swept out the shed, got "Kitchen" and his baby back in, and relaxed with a glass of pear cider, reading a pigeon novel on the garden bench outside the shed, and looking at the two of them sunning themselves in their Sputnik. I've just been thinking what a pleasant day to spend a mid July evening :-) My bad day has drifted away - and I only had the one cider so it's not that!
  4. I'm going to work my way through this! Thanks for posting the link - looks very good :-)
  5. Well done Sallyann. If you do come upon him again, something secure but airy (I guess even a cat box - that sort of thing) would be fine. Thanks again for your concern :-)
  6. Yes Phil, I did keep it quiet. But always remembered the thrill of taking those smooth birds out of that basket and throwing them into the air. Was always amazed that they were going to fly all the way back home. I guess I've never really lost that. Strange but true ;-)
  7. Thanks. My dad (no longer with us) knew someone called Ossie(?) Reynolds. He used to have a window cleaning round and might have lived off Corporation Road, Newport. I could be wrong as I was young at the time. My dad used to bring a whicker basket of pigeons home and it was a real treat for me to throw them in the air to go home. Must have been about 30 or more years ago. If anyone knew Ossie (might be wrong spelling) would love to hear about him.
  8. sorry to hijack, but on the subject of S Wales fanciers, does anyone know about any old members of clubs around the central/m4 Newport area? I'm talking 1970s now!
  9. No problem, Julie. I'll send you a parcel as soon as I get your addy. Shiny neck feathers? Definitely a boy ;-D ;-D
  10. Julie, it sounds like he's having a lovely stay with you! Sounds like he's got a great loft :-) I get my food already for pigeons. If you're likely to be having him for a while, I'd be happy to post you some won't cost you anything (pm me your address and I'll sort it). He might like a few redskin peanuts, but only ones humans can eat as the ones for wild birds can be harmful. I'm sure others will give more food suggestions. Let me know if you'd like a weeks supply of food :-)
  11. Apart from the fact that door frame part came apart! My woodwork skills aren't brilliant, but certainly not beyond me. Need to shift a conifer to get the slabs down. But as you say, it's certainly not much work.
  12. Cheers. I need to sort flooring out and do some chopping around, but that's a good suggestion. I water blasted the flight panels just after I got them, and am storing them dry in the garage. I need to do a few running repairs to strengthen them, but it's on my list without a doubt. Hope to be able to take a week or so off work to do it. David
  13. Thanks Phil. I'll move onto stage 2 :-) I'm also seriously thinking about your suggestion of trying to get hold of another hen for Blue Boy, but with some wing clipping os that she doesn't fly off. I'm going to do some shed adaptions over the weekend, so hope it cools down - really humid here at the moment. I'm flagging.
  14. Hi Phil. Yes, he's out every evening. He hasn't been particularly far, but had 1½ hours out on Saturday (mainly on a neighbour's roof - but flew between theirs and mine a few times), Sunday was about 5 minutes, but I think they were a bit too hungry - and then yesterday evening, he had a walk around the garden and then flew onto the shed roof for about 10 minutes. As the weather wasn't too good, it was no bad thing (thunder in the air). I'm a funny sight when I get into the shed, start calling and shake the food hopper around ;-D
  15. Sally - many thanks for joining the forum and posting this. Your care is very much appreciated. If you are able to catch the bird and report it (or even just report it in the first instance) to the contact OLDYELLOW provided, that'd be excellent. Regards :-)
  16. Looks a nice sunny and airy loft there Rab. I'm going to install some sort of shelves by my windows like yours. At the moment, mine are further away from the window, and spend a lot of their time in the Sputnik. Are yours about a few inches wide?
  17. We've had it really sunny and hot here, but around 4pm, the heavens opened. Pelted down. It then got brighter, and now, I can smell a storm heading our way (east to west) Looks like someone's just about to turn the lights off!
  18. Welcome to this excellent site. There's loads of helpful people. A mine of information. Enjoy :-)
  19. Cheers casbri. Am looking around :-)
  20. How long have they been operating? Is it stocked with fish? What sort of sunlight is it exposed to? questions, questions ;-D
  21. Cheers milkyal :-) Good luck, Louise :-)
  22. Excellent! Well done. Sounds like a tame bird (and/or hungry), but even a hungry bird won't always eat out of a hand. Are its eyes quite bright and open? You're doing very well looking out for it. Hopefully someone will be along soon to identify for you. Can anyone help identify? :-/
  23. Hi Louise. You've certainly posted it in the right place, and I'd be surprised if you don't get some information on the owner/owner's racing club soon. Perhaps everyone's off sunning themselves ;D For the moment, you're doing just the right thing in giving the fella some food and water. It might just need some rest and food, and isn't ready to make the journey home yet. Hence it coming back to you, as you're helping with refreshments. If not injured, it probably needs to build itself up before moving off. If the water is in a fairly deep bowl/container, that's perfect. If it lands on the floor and doesn't look too nimble, I'm worried about cats and other predators so a shelter away from them would be great. Hoping someone can post some club details for you. In the meantime, a big thank you for taking the time to register on the forum and reporting the little 'fella'. Best wishes.
  24. Just over a week ago. Escaped when cleaning out shed. Not a seasoned flyer, so I'd be really grateful if you could keep an eye out. Her mate's missing her ;-( Thanks.
