Street wise birds seeing a sparrowhawk will take to the sky and stay there until the threat goes, after a while the sparrowhawk will get fed up and move on.

I've only had female sparrowhawk killing the birds, they hit them as they land on the loft, not fast enough to kill in the air.
The comments etc from the RPRA should be being made directly by them on a regular basis and not just because they have been asked a question by a journalist!
