at £99 pounds for 6 ybs ,,it would allmost cost you that to rear ,ie feed parents as well, grit minerals pickstones ,,the work , the mess , i say it is a bargain , i have did this in the past and topped the fed with one , i in fact have one in the loft now that has flown well over 500 miles, so i think its a reasonable buy for a newstarter to get the hang of things and who knows just might ,,,finnish up with a decent bird my motto is allways blame yourself instead of the pigeon , ive seen people get pigeons from me[ free] 6 birds will go to one guy the 6 nestmates to another, one would say they were rubbish while the other has won yb league and through the season won a fair bit of cash[ quite a lot actually], so management goes for a lot.

hi roland while i respect your interesting post, my own thoughts would have been that these tests should have been done along with experienced pigeon fanciers, nothing really new in this ,racing, pigeons are gregarious and allways have been gregarious, being closely related to the rock dove. if you take pigeons in an open basket and leave them for 10 mins these birds will often head straight home, but if you took one in ,say a cardboard box , lifted out and let it go 9 times out of 10 it would land on the nearest roof ,until it got its bearings then would head for home, i beleive the younger the pigeon the more gregarious it is i.e/if you take a basket of young birds on their first or second training stint, put an old bird in among them, the chances are that the old bird would in fact not stick with the batch and would home on its own, while i agree with most of the post iis the fact that these learned people do these experiments without the aid of experienced fanciers, that could really be , a big help to them ,,just veering off the subject for a moment when the pigeons went by train [b4 dr beeching]the baskets were laid out on the platform at the race point, each one set back from the other, where they could all see out [and get plenty fresh air]there were far less losses then than there is now, when their in a transporter ,[ some of them a bit make shift ] these birds dont have the pleasure and chance of this , they have not much chance of all seeing out , apart maybe from a few bars at the front of the crate or basket, and no matter how good [or bad] the air conditioning is , they still will have to breath in foul air i/e/,5000 in a transporter, thats where the point in your post is so true [ the opaque carrier] against the card board box i mentioned earlier [in an exagerated way , but still true], anyway roland most interesting topics with plenty to discuss, and thanks for printing these out ,, iwill get all them as you said, and will be interested to have a good look, these are just my own thoughts and have just printed this quickly so i hope i havent said anything out of place, cheers for now roland ,j,w,

dont know where you are ben but , when i lived in kelso for a short time the goshawcks were rife, in all the big estates [killed many of my pigeons also my freinds 6mile away] tammy ;D ;D its not the mohawcks thats the trouble its the TOmohawcks, that the mohawcks use thats the trouble ;D ;D ;D
-
yes i agree with both of you , i hate condeming a yb , but usually find that some fanciers are too quick to blame the birds , without looking at themselves first
-
yes ,,big excitement next week for me, but sorry it was such a disaster this week,,i beleive a few fanciers worse off than hyacinth ,i just hope they all get more birds back
-
yes your bang on andy, there were so many champions through the years he bred and raced it would be hard to mention them all ,,,there are many great fanciers then and now, in scot , eng. ireland and wales , also many up and comming ones , all these fanciers come under one group,,,,the elite
-
yes me tammy,, sent one 2cnd nat ;D ;D ;D 1st in to scot flying over 600 miles
-
just a post script , do any of you remember eddie newcombes " red rock" timed in and won a prize in every national race,,,, ,,,same year,, 4 races over 500 miles within a few weeks
-
if my memory serves me right, edie newcombe was , i think 1,,,2,,3,,4..scottish nat, [as i mentioned b4 in my post ], but ommitted to say that at that time the snfc made it a 12 bird limit [as there were" people" sending big teams and thats why they won it] well eddie boy could only send 12 ,,the same as the rest , some how i think it was like putting a red rag to the bull, but anyway he proved them all wrong. p.s wonder if they would make it a 12 bird limit now???
-
im sure they get hawk wise but definately not hawk proof ,my freind working on the forth bridge where a pair of perigrines were nesting , watched the perigrine kill every day. 2 years ago a white pigeon appeared there and bred, and at that time my freind said it wouldnt last 5 mins with this hawk. well the white bird managed to dodge it for two years, but mr perigrine nailed him in the end.

did you get the photos bruno
-
bruno ,,, picture puzzling me,, ,i think the 2 outer flights are just the photo, but just performed one of my nutty proffesor experiments,, ive just went in to the loft and took a flight feather out,,,touched it at that point of your flight, with a cigarette, gave it a little brush , and it looks exactly the same , ill try and get pictiure of this flight feather,,, but just a shot in the dark , could this have been a spark, burn from chimney???,i know you dont smoke so its not you, must admit all this is very unlikely , but if i can just get this photo done and send it , you will be amazed at the resemblence :)
-
i think if it had been out a couple of nights while growing this feather the marks would be on both wing flights , a mouse would certainly do this , but would be more rather to think it would have been one of the outer flights , my own opinion is the moth is the culprit, but again thats a wild guess , but certainly a good photo explaining the prob

:) eagerly awaiting results from red rose lofts [hyacinth] oregon , clocks should be getting done about now,, [their 8 hours behind us , i thought it was 5 ] it was a real smash yesterday , and there were birds dropped in today , but hyacinth seems to have done well getting a 7 bird drop from 280 miles [all i know is my bird is among the 7 ]

i think the winter is the best time to recap on the past season [what did i do right, what did i do wrong ]then to plan the season ahead , systems feeding etc etc notes can allways be written down , then can be changed if need be, theres videos ,books, internet , plenty advice,, its the best time to iron every thing out in your mind , as changing things mid season usualy fails,,,,the old sunday school song allways springs to mind "the wise man built his house upon the rock "the foolish man built his house upon the sand, but the house on the sand fell down"[see i did go to sunday school ;D ;D and my other school was approved ;D ;D ;D], but what im saying is you must have the foundation stock or the birds from these,,,,better with few of these than many of the other , but theres a lot to think, and dream about in the winter , best of luck to you invincable spirit,, [and we all need that as well ;D ;D]
-
to answer gangsters question,, in my opinion , the perigrine prefers the chase of a batch the singling out of one then the kill, off course most of the batch are either dead or injured or that terrified they will go for cover,,,, the sparrow hawk is differant and will just appear low from nowhere , dive in , and very rarely misses its prey , mind you there are many other type of hawks as well,,,goshawk etc

hi roland quite interested to see these websites but dont seem to be able to get them for some reason, but ill keep trying, should imagine they would be quite interesting,

;D its actually true what rose said about the cones and pigeon man, about the seaweed, ;D ;D ;D,,,,,but hard to imagine all the convoyers in brittain going around with a cone necklace,,,and a seaweed wig ;D ;D ;D
-
;D ;D ;D yes the seaweed and the cones are better for me ;D ;D ;D far easier than this hi-tech stuff ;D ;D ;D just to prove it on the 4th of nov were going to have rain ;D ;D ;D ;D,,,,,2008 ;D ;D ;D ;D
