a system you need more time with , Ive never been struck on this system ,i,e hens laying , cocks comming with hens on race day, losing odd cocks , leaving odd hens , but there are many experts on this system who fly extraordinary well. you can keep the hen boxed , but would need as much excercise as cocks
-
when,,,,when their moulting , more linseed then. would use conditioner very sparinglywhen racing [hemp in conditioner can bring on a false form] just a pinch in their nest boxes after feed of an evening , with yb,s can be used to tame them and as a trapping mix [a little of what they fancy does them good ]
-
i would feed lightly after morning exercise then after evening exercise feed high protein diet [a full feed ,leaving no grub lying],,,,,,,,,these yb,s are growing all the time ,so i wouldn't stint them with the feed ,,,,,,,,,if their worked hard theil soon build up muscle , and if they do make a mistake , they will at least have some reserves to call on , you can win yb races keeping the yb,s hungry, but these birds will never develop well and maybe not last the pace as old birds , so i have to say ive won races with yb,s feeding well, and working well

an excellent article by jack barkell, i am convinced, the same as jack, that when the birds are due from the race , the birds ,,,cocks and hens left in the loft awaiting arrival , actually seem to know , when birds are due ive mentioned this b4 and folks thought i was mad [dont answer that ] but call it what you like , i find this to be true,,,,,,,,,maybe just to give frank1 [or any others] just a brief guide to w,hood first of all the birds must be paired and rear either one or two youngsters , then when sitting their second round of eggs about8 days [i find any later than this they tend to cast flights]at this stage of sitting can be given a few short tosses, after this all birds seperated [hens as far away as poss.] leaving the cocks in the open end of their nest box, at this stage they should be out an hour as early as poss, then back in , and PERFECT peace ,all day till about 5pm when this exercise is repeated [the feeding would depend on the kind of races you intend trying] at first they will mope and miss their hens a little but after a short time theyll be bouncing around then begin to fly longer [if trained at this period they will stop flying] after a fortnight approx , i would put the hen in the locked side of the box,and lock the cocks out for a while [experienced cocks wouldnt need this ] then i would let the cocks in , let them in to their hens, then basket them after about 10 mins [this exercise would just be done once b4 racing] then take them a short toss ,say 5 or 10 miles , then back in to their hens ,making sure no bird has been frightened in any way ,after a short while with the hens, seperate , and the cocks back on w,hood flying i hour am. and one hour pm,[if the weather at this time is not good releasing them one by one from the basket in the garden ,back in to their hens] if any fly round , basket again when in to their hen, then repeat ,,,till every cock is going straight in and your able to put your hand in and open the door of the w. hood front [they will soon get the message and be unafraid of your hand , more interested in waiting on that nest front door opening ,now is the time that the cocks need regular times and will begin to fly longer and longer ,sometimes flying the full hour am. and pm. if mine were doing this,,,,,,,,i would not toss , it would then be a case of showing them the hens prior to basketing and letting them in to their hens on return from the race ,,,,,,,,,,,,as jack barkell remarked there are certain cocks better on this system than others , contarary to beleive i wouldnt choose highly strung excitable birds i would much prefer the calm type that are unafraid of you , when they are in their box [older birds being on this system b4 will take to it right away] there is much more to it , but this is just the basics [i would only toss a bird if i missed a race or two with it ,unless i had a specific reason for it]

this is one of gladdo,s rings [which a few fanciers have had difficulty in getting transferred ] this bird belongs to a young boy who thinks he also put a red marker ring on the ring number [hes not sure of the last number ] is ,,, IHU O 08 S 2322? [COULD BE A 4 OR AN 8 ] and its a cheq, white flight,, it was lost in the lothians area , im sure he would love to get this bird back
-
its very intresting ,,seemed trustworthy this weekend ill check that out each week now
-
i knew a fancier that bought colatone, gave it to his birds that week,, won the race ,,,,,went back to the supplier nearly bought him out of the stuff, ;D,,,,,,,,,,,,but sadly, never won another race its like a tipster ,sending out tips for horses , if theres 12 horses running,, he gives everyone a tip for every horse , [on a big scale] say the winner was 20 to 1 ,,,,,,,,,all the folk who got that horse would think the tipster was fantastic, and send a fortune for more tips????
-
simple way to do that is make it £5 per bird ;D [ittl never happen ;D] but fanciers would only keep the best , fewer ailments , more enjoment [rather than a chore] cleaner lofts , less gambling , prize money would go to the winners [not a pooler at the bottom of the result ;D] et etc,,,[and you send a mini instead of a transporter ;D], dream on ;D ;D ;D
-
pay for amtrack and ill send you a lovely big grizzle hen free
-
no, this is quite above board , just as long as he gets new distances and change of loft location, I'm sure billy would love this , and i must say you have been a great help to billy . he would have to keep well away from the birds , even wear a mask in their proximity, im quite sure yourself, chickadee , and billy would love it , sitting their on a lovely sunny day [if we ever get one ;D] waiting on pigeons and having a good crack
-
well said ronnie, the members sent the birds , often too much blame is put on race controllers , but i feel the members who sent should take half the blame, convoyers and race cotrollers , have a most difficult, and thankless job , when some one loses 30 birds and another member in the same race loses one,, its themselves they should be looking at

yes i agree with both of these past two posts , maybe apart from the barley and pea nuts, i find peanuts excellent ,for putting on that little extra body needed for a long journey , but have found , merlin, that when feeding peanuts , they wont eat the barley , they obviously love the pea nuts , i find they get crafty, and stubborn and will wait on the peanuts :) and lennut , i agree with your points [i think their more imortant than folks think, the bird has to love you ,,again the 3 c,s ,,,,,,,condition, contentment and control [sir colin must have loved me ; :K) :K) :K) i loved him ;D after he won five grand ;D ;D ;D,being the first bird into scotland, flying over 600 miles [2cnd national] but to be honest money doesnt interest me nowadays it just causes trouble :-/ :-/ one question i would like to ask , what do the member think of sending a hen with a newly hatched chick, say 500 miles + [i,e, crop milk] i have heard a lot of fanciers against this , but i often wonder if the bird can call on this crop milk as reserves, for the distance :-/ :-/ :-/

now we are pretty near to the distance races have members any fads or fancies i,e w,hood ,,,natural,,,feeding ,,training etc. i would say in my experience a well bred 2 year old for 5 to 550 miles and 3y,o upward for the 600+miles i have been luckier with w,hood up to 600 miles + but note there are still more natural birds scoring sitting on eggs 10 days, my veiw would be three or four races ,with possibly the last race doing 8 hours on the wing if poss.approx 3 weeks b4 the big one , then after recovery a few decent longer tosses approx 100 miles [on good days] gradually increasing the protein nearing the race, and if poss manage the bird so that its just dropped its first or second flight, with the next flight just bursting through,,,,,any veiws on this
