  7. yes, I'm sure he would be a great help[keith mott],with both, the disease and the pigeons , allthough he must miss his pigeons badly, his health, must come first , so lets hope and pray that billy and anyone else in a situation like that , can manage to fight this and regain their health.
  8. i have seen these so called roland jansens win prizes at 500 miles + i allways say , theres as many types of races than there is pigeons,,,,,,a good one is a good one no matter what so called breed think ill get some roland buttas ;D ;D ;D

  10. i think ive got my comp fixed,,,hope so ,,, it may be worth just getting an experience fancier to" look the birds over" just to be on the safe side , as its not really" normal" for them to die at this age
  11. beat me to it fifer,,my computer is like me tonight ,,a bit slow ;D ;D
  12. this is rock salt or" coos lick" known in Scot ;D for obvious reasons , pigeons love salt , but there is enough salt in many preparations for pigeons ,,iodized black minerals [we used to call black salt ] has salt in it [also bleach believe it or not some grits contain salt ,,,,,too much salt can be harmfull ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the best salts ,,are summersalts ;D when you win a race ;D
  13. cheq pied ,ets ring on,, hasnt cast a flight yet,,,but first flight broken
  14. sorry micko,,having bother with computer... "dunc",, dovecot should be able to help you , possibly something went wrong with these two young ones ,,,it can happen , there can be many reasons ,, but at least its good to know the others are ok [wish my comp was ]

  18. all the very best boomerang, wish you luck for the future
  19. whichever way you look at it these are the worst things to cause salmonella,[paratyphoid] in pigeons sound deterrents can be bought at homebase , that do actually work

  21. in my opinion this is very true , pellets can be good for the right reasons at the right time, but by using pellets alone , you are [in my veiw] making the gizzard redundant ,,,,,the gizzard is a muscle that holds the grit and masticates the grain , like all parts of the pigeon, must be in good working order
  22. the questions your asking are not stupid ,, best way to find out about pigeons , is go to a local "good pigeon flier" ,,,keep looking at this forum, and ask as many questions as you can 1, pigeons can vary in price from free to thousands of pounds [some times the free ones are best :)if from a good flier 2,pigeons are best trained as young birds, starting about 10 to 12 weeks old when their flying well round the neighbourhood , take them just a few miles [after you've got them used to the basket ,i,e eating and drinking in the basket] usually take them in good weather 3 ,,,5,,,10 ,,15,,20 miles keep them at the 20 mile point until their coming home very quickly .i,e b4 you get back when training these distances ,keep them peckish and reward them when they get home, with a little seed , then their feed ,,don't let them out after this ,, take them again the next day :)then maybe even further 3 the race programme in your local club is usually mapped out for you ,,,,,dates etc old birds first usually starting in April , then yb,s staring in late July or Aug 3, the races work by , you taking your birds to your local club where they will be basketed in their baskets [handing in your entry form with your ring numbers of the birds you are sending] a special rubber ring with a code number will be put on each bird with a" ringer" just a small instrument that flips the ring on,then all the birds would travel to the race point in a large pigeon transporterthis is usualy on the friday evening , then the birds are released on the saturday morning ,,,,when the bird returns from the race , you would have to have a pigeon clock which would be set by your club.when the bird enters your loft ,take the rubber ring off place it in a special "thimble"put this in the clock and strike it , then the clock will tell you the time your birds rubber ring was put in the clock , all the clocks, and rubber rings of all the members are then checked by a clock committee , then you will be given a receipt of the time of your pigeon ,,,the best time does not always win the race as each loft had its exact measurement from the race point to the members loft , some members are flying further than you, some maybe flying shorter than you , the result is worked out in velocity i,e yards per minute, so the fastest velocity wins I'm sure if you keep looking at the forum , ask questions ,look up all past posts you will get the hang of it in no time ,,best of luck kevin
  23. i would tend to agree with marks post ,,,,,,,,but sometimes ways to overcome this, if theres any fanciers like mark with a batch of yb,s see what times he lets his out , then hopefully they would join in and fly more , if one breaks off and lands b4 the rest, as shadow pointed out , keep that one in till the others have had a decent fly , then put him out ,,,,its allways worth a try
  24. probably about the next day
  25. i really think that the strain is not so important than the management ,i,e there are different ways to set pigeons up for races at different times and also at different distances , as ive said b4 sometimes a good look at all the back posts gives you a better insight into the pigeon racing , and off course , most members are willing to help
