I suggest you look at the map, the shortest crossing from the tip of the peninsula is to Portland, although it is around 4 miles west of line of flight from Messac to the central belt of Scotland. The fact of the matter is, 53 birds are home after 3 days from 1159 and we are none the wiser.

I agree, but if the birds held a perfect line and crossed at shortest point on cherbourg peninsula, they would have flown straight into Portland.After all, the winds on channel were very light and they were up in no wind. Its all ifs and buts.
