    jailed

Pigeon-cree arsonist jailed for two years ndrew Hubbard. An arsonist who started a cree fire which killed 160 pedigree pigeons has been jailed for two years. Andrew Hubbard was branded a coward by cree owner Raymond Hammond, who has dipped into his pit pension to replace the birds. Durham Crown Court heard Mr Hammond lost birds valued at £30,000, and three crees worth another £16,000. "The crees were at a Paradise Allotments in Easington Colliery," said Michael Graham, prosecuting. "There had been problems with vandalism at the allotments and one of the holders decided to stop overnight in a caravan. "He was awoken at 2.30am by the loud noises of the glass in the crees breaking. "Police were called and arrested this defendant in a nearby back lane. "He was obviously drunk, he was sweating, smelled of smoke, and there were pigeon droppings and feathers stuck to his trainers." Hubbard, 28, of Nesbit Road, Peterlee, admitted arson on July 29, last year. He was of previous good character. Roger Moore, defending, said in mitigation: "While one feels for Mr Hammond's loss, this was not the worst case of arson and no human lives were put at risk. "Mr Hubbard, who had not offended before this incident, appears to have been depressed and to have had far too much to drink. "He functions on a pretty simple basis, and he never seems to have got over the depression caused by the death of his father." Judge Peter Armstrong jailed Hubbard for two years and told him: "There was no reason for this serious offence of arson, other than you were depressed and had drunk too much. "It is a sad case all round, sad for Mr Hammond because of what he has lost, but also sad for you. "You have lost both your good name and your liberty." Speaking after the case, Mr Hammond said: "Hubbard is a coward who creeps around at night causing bother, rather than face anyone. "I'm pleased he got a jail sentence, because you know how the system works these days and I was worried he would get off. "I love the birds and the sport and first went to the allotments 50 years ago with my father, when I was three years old. "I've started again in a different place. It's my only hobby and once you are into the birds there is no way you can just give it up." Mr Hammond said his new pigeons had had their first race at the weekend and some had done very well

  16. Albert, Dave, +Fred, would like too say a big thank you too all the members who have offered young birds, And other help, they would like too point out, that it was a miss print in the Sunderland echo, there was 8 young birds killed out of the 60 they had in the loft, so they still have enough young birds too race . once again a big thank you from the brothers.
  17. A pigeon fancier has been left devastated after sick thugs pulled the heads off about 60 of his birds. Albert Woodroffe was left shaken by the horrific scene that greeted him after his new pigeon loft was broken into and many of his four-week-old birds killed. "It's terrible," said the lifelong Sunderland pigeon man. "I feel absolutely sick. I couldn't dn't even bring myself to look in the loft properly because it made me feel so ill. I need to calm down. "A friend came to see me in the morning to tell me that the cree had been broken into and I just couldn't believe it. I was devastated." The 61-year-old added: "Whoever pulled the heads off the birds will have been covered in blood afterwards so if anyone noticed someone with blood all over them then please tell the police." Mr Woodroffe was in the process of moving his flock of prime racing pigeons from an old cree at Coldstream Avenue, Southwick, to a newly-built loft off Newcastle Road, Fulwell. He said: "I decided to shift out of the square in Southwick after 45 years of absolutely no problems, to move them up to Fulwell where I've had new lofts built, which are absolutely fantastic. "They've only been there for two days and then this happens – it's unbelievable." Mr Woodroffe, who races as part of the Woodroffe Brothers who are known across Europe for their racing, said he has never been targeted like this before, and the price-tag on the birds would have been high. "I've been keeping pigeons all my life and I'm 61 now," he said. "My dad did it before me and he died about 40 years ago. Nothing like this has ever happened before." The bird killers broke into his pigeon loft by smashing down the door some time between 7pm on Sunday and 7am yesterday. Police have launched an investigation into the killings and are asking anyone with information or witnesses to contact them on 03456 043043.

  24. Castletown Homing Society has secured a grant from the Community Foundation's Grassroots Grants programme to increase security for the birds following a spate of break-ins around the region. The money – which will go towards new window grilles as well as improvements to the electricity supply at the loft – comes at a critical time for the society which will celebrate its 59th anniversary this year. Ernie Watson, vice-chairman of the society, said: "We don't want to become victim to an arson attack or break-ins like some of the lofts around here have been subject to, so we applied to the Community Foundation for this funding. "It really was very straightforward and they couldn't have been more helpful." Now the Community Foundation is encouraging small groups like Castletown Homing Society to apply to Grassroots Grants, which still has more than £75,000 to spend. Grants of up to £5,000 are available for any constituted group that has a turnover less than £20,000, has been going for more than a year and has a full set of accounts. [from the sunderland echo]
