Be patient and as some have already said if your birds have been locked up all winter they will take time to build up the flying time, by what you have said they fly for 20 minutes then there is not much wrong with them health wise, just build it up gradually and one of the most important things about getting birds to fly around the loft for an hour with spirit is routine, routine, routine keep to the same times and the birds will get to know when to fly and when to come in and feed and they will drop and trap within seconds. also remember that it all depends on there current nest condition,eg sitting eggs, feeding young birds or driving or are they separated, so alway remember that a pigeon flyes or not according to what is going on in its head, a driving cock wants to clap and chase its hen and not fly in a tight kite of birds and once one lands they will all start to land. so be patient and if you are going to flag or throw a ball at them to increase the time, I always throw the ball once and after that let them come down, remember you dont want to sacre them too much, bad traps cost races. I hope you have a good season and enjoy it, good luck. -
everyones experiences seem to match up, its a pitty swainstons have gone down hill, I hope they read this. :-/
-
Ive used Swainstons for about 7 years and raced well on it , but last year I bulk bought and the feeding was full of blue and white peas( which the birds didn't like) and I was stuck with it. the feeding is not as good as it used to be, too inconsistent with the mixing.

The hawk will be sitting eggs soon then it will be ok to let them out, I just hope this cold weather doesn't slow there mating-up down too much.

Using bodybuilding products for pigeons
bullcock replied to bullcock's topic in Products & Medication
We tried creatine one year with the young birds a few years back and we had a great young bird season, the following year we never used it and had an even better season? :-/ I think people are too quick to think a product was responsible for better results when it might have had nothing to do with it. -

the sports governing bodys must have a list of these banned substances and the products that they may be found in, although pubicising this might give some people ideas. but how can you aviod them if you don't know? did someone not get thrown out of the olympics for using a nasel decongestant years ago! -

Cheers mate, everything to do with pigeons is expensive. -
What do think about using body building products that promote muscle growth and fast recovery for racing pigeons during the season? Does anybody actually use these products? Are they legal? Do you think the birds would benifit from them? :-/ Answers on a postcard or replay on the site its much easier.

Enjoy your 1st years experience and try not to look too much at the results, yes try and compete but better still try and learn from the successful flyers and your own mistakes which we all make(even the good flyers will make mistakes) its recognising and solving them that makes a good flyer. keep your ears open and listen to the advice of the good flyers around you. hope you have a successful season and some good birds left over.

Is the race in 2011 or 2010 ?
-
It all depends on what races you are intrested in the darkness is geared towards the later racesn nationals and combine races, if you are wanting to compete in them then take them off around the middle of june but if you are only raceing your fed program which will finish earlier than the nationals i would take it off around mid may. There is no point in having birds just coming into form when your season if finishing, then you have to get them through the moult, take them off early and they will race good and moult through earlier.

Most people who treat for canker "blind-treat" as a perventative that means the birds don't actually have a canker problem but they treat to keep the count down especially when rearing young birds. I treat once a month a half course to keep the count down and the birds healthy, if the birds had been diagnoised with canker then i would treat the full course.

Its because of the hawk we shut the birds up, if I let them out all winter I will be feeding the hawks all winter. Even just before the season starts when the birds are super fit the hawk can take a bird from my loft every time it attacks ive wittnessed this first hand.
-
our doos have been locked up all winter but have been out over the last two weeks and the hawk killed one two days ago, i never let them out yesterday but i did today and i stayed with the birds and as i was coming out the loft they all went up again, I don't know if it got one but what can you do. :o There are doo men two streets from me who let there birds out all winter and havent lost any???? :'(
-
yes it works well , ive even had a spare cock in the widowhood end and it performed as good as the birds with nest boxes and hens to fly to, it was flying to a perch.
-
I had this once it looked purple in colour as if it was full of blood, I tied a piece of fishing line tight around it and it fell off itself and the bird never showed any sign of discomfort.
-
Ive raced the roundabout system for around 10 years now and always reared young birds , but 2 seasons ago I raced them "dry" which means they didn't rear" and we had a very successful season we tryed it again last year but for some reason we won well for the first 4 races then they fell away and the losses were higher than normal ??? I can't put my finger on what happened, but htis year we are rearing again as per the normal system.
