    WEATHER

Well i wish i had weather like that, but here in Iceland we had the worst day this winter yesterday, started with snow in the morning but turned into wind up to 40 meters per second and heavy rain midday and until midnight.Today it´s snowing again, some wind but the temp is +3 degrees. Paired up wednesday, the birds are in super condition and all pairs paired up by friday. They don´t seem to mind the weather.

    My new loft

The weather here in iceland got even worse today, not as cold as last week but alot of snow and windy, this morning it took me 45 minutes to get to work, usually 15, lots of people didn´t got to work and many cars stuck in the snow or went off the road. It must get better soon!!!

    A WASTE OF MONEY

The only products i have bought that i felt a difference are brewers yeast and a special icelandic cod liver oil for the winter, so for me almost all the other products are a waste of money, but i do use some natural stuff that i buy in the grocery store.

A little update on things here in Iceland, the hens moved to the new loft today, well 5 hens and 1 cock which i thought was a hen up until 2 days ago, seems that it was laying low until i turned on the lights in the hens loft last week, then it just blossomed and turned into this beutiful little cock and mated with one of the hens. 3 out of 5 pairs have paired up already Here are a few pics. In the first one is the blue cock that i thought was a hen and his Roland Jansens hen, they are closed up to break them in to the box. In the second one is my best couple from last year in the blue box and thier son in the one below and in the third pic is his hen. And in the fourth pic is a beutiful Roland Janssens cock.

    My new loft

ohh come on it´s not all that bad, ok it´s cold now but usually we very mild winters and little snow and the summers are very mild too, not too hot but always between 10 and 25 degrees, i remember reading and seeing on the news about the summer in England 2007, very good was it? Merlin, here we have very few problems with predators, once in awhile a folcon comes for a visit but they usually cause no harm, we know very few of the diseases we read about on the internet and we do not drug our birds mainly because we have no pigeon medicine here but if a bird gets sick it usually has to go and i believe thats what has kept the racing pigeons of Iceland healthy, what do you mean with B.O.P. ?? Lennut Tar, Take a look at this site and maybe you will change your mind about visiting http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/iceland.shtml

I forgot to tell you about the origin of the hens in the earlier post but 4 of them are Roland Janssens and 3 from the "Little Belgian" family

Well the white cock is the only unrelated cock there and it is a Roland Janssens from John and Alex Mellor. All the other cocks are down from "The little belgian" BELG-98-3251922 which i imported in 1998 and has proven to be a very good breeder, i don´t know if he will be fertile this year but i will try to get some youngsters from him, he got sick with salmonella a few years back when he was in another loft and never really recoverd properly and as you can see on this pic he is getting very old and tired.

Thanks Spencer, yes it looks a little bit in the middle of nowhere. Well, sapper756, i don´t keep them from freezing i just break the ice out of them and put new water in, thats why i use the little gray 2 liter drinkers over the winter, it´s easier to get the ice out of them.

It is actually about 4km. from my home on an old family land, but it is a big difference for me to only drive 4km. instead of 20km. before to the old loft. And p charlton: no there are not many flyers in that area, 6 or 7 in a 20-30km. radius.

    My new loft

Just wanted to share with you all some pictures of my new loft and birds. This is an old shed which i paid for with 2 cases of beer, now i have spent some money on getting it ready for the birds but it´s not so much. It´s a small shed which i have split into two compartments, one for my 6 pairs of breeders and one for the youngsters, i plan to bring another shed before next winter to house the yearling race birds next summer, as you can see there is lots of space there for another shed or even many sheds :) The first 2 show the direction which the birds come home from race.

  25. Thought it could lift the mood on here a little bit if we all played a little game. I´m sure most of you have seen these games on the internet but here is how it goes. I will put up a picture of a pigeon or a dove (any type, wild, fancy or whatever) and the first one to post the right name will get to put on the next pic, and so on and so on. Over 300 wild species exist and countless fancy types so this could go on for a while. Here is the help post for uploading photos http://www.pigeonbasics.com/forum/blah/m-1157593065/ So lets get started, here is the first picture, HAVE FUN!!
