Been told of a pigeon that flew Sartilly(1),Nantes and Sartilly(2) all in one season to Lesmahagow. A good flier in my fed scored very well with a hen from the Fed open around 380miles on the Saturday, the hen was basketted on the tuesday for Rennes around 560miles and came on the night, well up the sheet, the pigeon was then sent back to Nantes and scored well Not many birds will handle that kinna racing

Central Fed Result Consett
Rooster J. Cogburn replied to wee ecky's topic in Scottish Central Combine Results
I know its a fast race but theres a big drop in velocity from 1st to 20th Northwest fed was the same this week probably around 9 minutes between 1st and 40th Would usually expect more than 40 birds in 9 minutes from well over 2000 entered flying 120miles on a 1900 day.Well done the winners though -
Been ringing mare the last couple of days The others are doing a fair bit of rakin now Will leave them be for a while yet,let them get dragged aboot the place a bit more before I start them tossing

Quite a good tip I was given to stop them going mental the first time you put them in a basket is to basket them when its dark and leave them in there all night. I weaned the birds to a basket for a few days last year but theres loads of ways to do it. Agree with STB though you want them as used to it as possible come the first race so they arnae flapping about like madmen

Hope to send around 40 to Ripon-154miles

Northwest there as well this week 154miles to the shortest flying lofts Think it'll be a bit stiffer than what we've had the last two weeks

John Ellis Of Elphinstone
Rooster J. Cogburn replied to Rooster J. Cogburn's topic in Breeding, Strains & Families
I didn't realise he was still alive If you were top flier in Elphinstone you were dain no bad bit of a hotbed -
Loft location plays a pretty big part in fed racing especially under 200miles but the best fliers regardless of their location good or bad always shine through. Colin seems to be one of these fliers and a lot of people have a lot of good things to say about him and birds they have recieved from him.One thing I noticed very early when starting up the pigeons was that some people enjoy bringing down the likes of your McNeills,Tam Blairs and Macaloneys etc etc."Hes a mob flier"He sits in the best postion" and so it goes on.Truth of the matter is a lot of these people could stay next door to these guys and would still be getting it handed to them every week.Obviously these guys have good systems, good doos and are very knowledgable but its fairly obvious why they do so well. The word dedication was mentioned in another post. They put more into their doos than the guys who criticse them hence the reason they get more out

Aye think one of Dale Newcombes Rennes Winners was down through this pair-could be wrong though. Notice John Ellis,Elphinstone won a Gold award as well. I know John Ellis,Wellbank-got a cracking dark cock from him but heard the name from Elphinstone a few times now and was just curious -
John Ellis Of Elphinstone

Different John Ellis Frank.Think a lot of folk called him Ian Ellis. Don't know too much about him to be honest but think he had a pair called Lothian King and Lothian Queen. -
Anybody got any old articles or information about John Ellis from Elphinstone?? Understand his doos played quite a big part in Dale Newcombe's loft.Have heard one or two top distance men saying he had the best team of pigeons they have ever seen

Well done Davie Laurie Notice one or two more of the danger men creeping into the frame this week as well.First open race is only three weeks away The seasons flying in -
Correct You have to be doing something right to be getting team performances like these
-
Interesting argument Firstly-Shortest flying loft doesn't mean first drop Secondly-in the fed I race in the first drop are lucky to top the fed 1 race out of 7 or 8. Thirdly-I'm sure there will be lofts in as advantaged a position as Roundo who are minutes at the back each week same as in the clubs that lie further West or in disadvantaged positions in the fed. Out of curiosity where in the Central Fed is the most "favourable" place to race to??
-
Firstly you've got to ask yourself why its ages behind or days late. A lot of the time theres something you could do to make it quicker. Obviously if its days late its a cause for concern but have heard of a lot of fantastic 500mile pigeons that were never seen coming home from a club race but would usually drift in when the fancier was down the club with his clockfull of fast yins.

Good result for yer lassies team Glad to see it was a worthile journey
