  1. thanks for the advice guys ive put cider vinager in their water tonight as peterpau recomends and i will phone around some vets tomorrow morning i was told to try liquidised banana via a syringe on the birds not eating or able to keep corn down and so far it seems to have worked i also mixed some multi vits in for good measure so hopefully that will help? thanks again debbie
  2. two of my yb,s started coughing up their corn yesterday after eating and today they are refusing to eat at all they have now developed dark green/white runny dropping and one yb has a spongey feel to his crop? they are still quite lively but im worried that this is the start of yb sickness? what do you think and is there anything i can do or give to them today to help them or ease their symptoms? isnt bicarbonate of soda meant to help? any advice would be much appreciated :-/ debbie

    stray birds

i was told by a neighbour that a friend of his had been feeding/watering a stray and keeping it in her shed when i asked if they wanted me to report it i was told that it had already been reported through the rpra and the owner was going to ring them back :-/ i later found out that the stray ended up dying in the shed after approx 1wk-10 days but they wasnt really suprised as they had already been told by others that fanciers never want them back and in this case they were proved right i did try to explain that some fanciers do want their birds back but somehow after their experience i dont think they believed me debbie ps the owner never did ring them back >

  9. well done david thats 2 lucky pigeons that have ended up in your loft no doubt they will live a life of luxury and hopefully live to a ripe old age you went out of your way to help basics boy especially getting a hen bird for him i wish you the best of luck for the future debbie
  10. as oldyellow said it looks like something has dropped on the box but i dont agree with his comments when he says 'sod the animals welfare, as i thought that was what this post was all about as for getting a few free deliverys whats the point if your bird/s could end up like damians? i know most of us rely on amtrak but there are other couriers such as the phantom flyer tel 01329 664433/07709913131 (who ive heard also feeds/waters the birds) and the pigeon express tel 07912 947743 but i dont know what areas they cover? debbie
  11. sorry to hear about your problems ben as said on here its probably wild birds that are knocking moss off the roof (or most of it)and they cant stop them landing on the roof just try and stay friendly with your neighbours even if you dont want to as it could stop the council getting involved good luck debbie
  12. hi damian how many days did it take for amtrak to collect and deliver the bird?? what a total disgrace > i agree with bigda send the pictures to amtrak and the local papers (i would send the pictures to anybody i would think could help) that must must be soul destroying opening a box to see that all the time we sit back and let this happen it will just carry on happening >:(we need to make some noise when this sort of thing happens good luck debbie

    stray birds

ring the tel no on the wing stamp karl if the owner has gone to the trouble of stamping it then he/she may well want it back at least give the owner the choice i woud certainly want to know where my bird had ended up (preferably not it the bin) all the best debbie
  14. count me in im more than happy to help out i think its a brilliant idea any alternative to amtrack has got to be good and on the bonus side the pigeons would be collected and cared for by fanciers amtrack called to me on tuesday without a box for the pigeon and had to wait while i found a box for it it wouldnt have been so bad if the driver could talk reasonable english in the end i had to write the fanciers name/address on the box underneath the words `racing pigeon, written in capital letters on the plus side the pigeon did arrive safely in bristol the next day but was that more luck than judgement :-/ debbie

  17. hi all thanks again for all the replies i noticed in dr colin walkers extract (posted by IB) that he states that when a pigeon becomes more than 15% dehydrated that it interferes with the pigeons level of conciousness and when i collected my pigeon i noticed that she was having trouble keeping her eyes open so maybe this was the start of it? as i said earlier my pigeon seemed to start to recover when i was feeding her water via a syringe but looking back now she did take a long drink on her own the day before she died? was this drink too much for her damaged liver/kidneys to cope with? i think maybe i just got to her too late to turn her around? debbie
  18. hi thanks for all the replies/ advice how would you know when a dehydrated pigeons salt level is back to an acceptable level so that you can then give it free access to the water drinkers? sorry for all the questions but knowledge is power as they say debbie
  19. thanks mixxy and IB for the replies i did wonder about the pigeons organs mixxy as she was so underweight and also a fancier nearby seemed to think she had a yellow tinge to her eye ceres so could have been the liver that failed? i rescued a wood pigeon last week that was being attacked by crows only to find that it had an open crop wound that was totally rancid and the smell was unbearable so unfortunatly all we could do was end its suffering ( it sounds like you got to your pigeon just in time IB) crows certainly know how to seek out injured/sick animals but its the survival of the fittest i suppose even though its hard to stomach sometimes also thanks to oldyellow for his advice re mineral and salt levels its all advice that will no doubt come in handy in the future what would be the best supplement to give a flown out pigeon to top up its mineral and salt levels ? :-/ debbie
  20. i had a yb reported about 30 miles away which i collected only to find that she was very underweight and wouldnt stand on her own, also she was refusing any corn/water i decided to hand feed her a small amount of seeds, and bread as i thought this would be easier for her to digest i also gave her water via a syringe mixed with a multi-vit plus brewers yeast and left her in a basket overnight to rest the next morning i noticed that she was now standing on her own but still refusing to eat so i hand fed and watered her again and put her back into her basket to rest yesterday i noticed that she was now eating corn and drinking on her own and assumed that she was recovering only to find her dead in her basket early this morning i noticed that her crop was empty so she had digested the corn ok but her droppings had turned dark green :-/ can anybody give a reason as to why she suddenly died ?? debbie
