It has been decided that marking for our first combine race will be 8.00am, they have previously been basketted Thursday afternoon. It is unlikely they will be fed before being released so any suggestions as they will need to be in the basket by 7.00am.It's a 275 mile race

so they are getting marked at 8am and raced the following day? Id feed little during Thursday ( 1/2 oz) then feed them at 3-4am Friday morning, high carbs, high fats as much as they want. Not much more you can do and its unfortunate they will be without a meal for over 26 hours before lib.

Yes Derek. The last few years they have been race marked Thursday, fed on the transporter Friday. Or gone Friday afternoon, but not got to the racepoint until 6.30am. It's the NEHU Eastbourne race. The members decided they should go Friday, but to get to the racepoint Friday night so the birds can rest (no mention of the poor drivers) they would have to be race marked first thing

Quite unfair on a lot of fanciers to be honest.

Sue do you not feed ad lib on a thursday anyway?

The cocks are fed individually - the hens are fed in a trough - all as much as they want on Thursday afternoon (is that ad lib?) But they usually eat an ounce on a Friday

when's the race RCH? if in the next fortnight you'll only get approx 1 hour 15mins from sunup till basketing. Once they get their mates or nestbowl they'll not be interested in eating or drinking so the time available will be very limited. I personally would feed all they want Thursday then fill pots & trough with a mixture of small seeds and leave overnight so they could pick at this first light day of basketing.
