billy whizz Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Orite guys im pretty new to the pigeon world and become a little obsessed with them i keep rollers & tumblers at the min was thinking about getting into racing pigeons in the new year. What would i need to set up how many birds ect? does anyone keep there birds in a double or triple kit box set up or just a standard loft. Id like to keep it as simple as i can. Many thanks
paddymac Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 You wouuld be better off starting small Billy until you the get the way of it all. Look up for local fanciers and clubs in your own area and go have a chat with them as well as looking at their set-ups and the methods of racing that their using
billy whizz Posted October 8, 2014 Author Report Posted October 8, 2014 yeah i was thinking maybe 15 birds half cocks half hens i just need some basic info on how id go about prepping the birds for racing and how many can you enter on a race and do i have to separate them all that stuff bit confusing this racing game but i find it very interesting.
sheppy27 Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 i would agree with Paddy finding someone who races close by is the easiest way of gaining knowlege i am starting racing next year but have spent the last 6 or 7 months going to a friends and asking and watching his birds arrive home on a weekend
C WRIGHT Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 i would sugest starting with young birds bought or gifted by good local and surrounding top lofts which in turn you can race and try them out that year the yb s are easy to motivate and by the end of the yb season your birds will have learned you a few tricks you will be left with the best only at the end of the season which is a good start for the next years listen to everyone who is willing to share thier wee secrets tweek them to suit yourself birds and loft its a great sport new myself and loving it all the best mate
showman Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Coming into contact with other fanciers is a great thing. The autumn and winter period should also be used to its' maximum also. Try to attend a few shows and if possible, when judging is finished, politely explain to the judge that you're a new starter, and see if they'll give you a bit of info on their choice of prize winners. You will also see advertised pigeon 'moots'. Basically, this involves a few (3 or 4)experienced fanciers being invited to a venue to answer questions from what can be a good crowd of fanciers, eager to pick their brains. Don't worry, you're not under any pressure to ask anything, more so to listen and learn !! And READ !! Read everything you can get your hands on over the winter months. Some of the articles you can disregard as too complicated etc. Read these articles, and from them you can adopt your own system. From these you can also get a pictorial view of pigeon lofts. Some of them will strike you as 'palatial', forget them....that's the future !! The system you initially choose can be adjusted where necessary. Don't buy into the 'success from a bottle' club. Clean food, clean water to begin with, and go from there. IMO.Best of luck.
billy whizz Posted October 9, 2014 Author Report Posted October 9, 2014 Cheer fellas i know a few fanciers but get lost with what there saying sometimes ill keep quizzing them
billy whizz Posted October 17, 2014 Author Report Posted October 17, 2014 DO any of you lads on here race out of a converted shed say 6x2 can it be done this way? Or do you need 2-3 different sections ect If i was to start racing what is the most simple way to set up. Cheers
paddymac Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 If you planning to start off small Billy 6x2 would be sufficient enough to get you started and then you can expand as you gain better knowledge. As long as the loft is well ventilated and dry it will be okay, the biggest problem in most lofts is that we tend to overcrowd and thats when the problems begin. So just keep it small to start with and you will learn as you go along

MIK Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 forget about pairs with a 6x2, buy 2 x kits of 6 young birds from fanciers that do well into your area. Race them out and what your left with then you can breed from and think about expanding then jmoMick
