Hi Guys,

Whats everyone's opinion on training AM or PM?

I know often it is dependent on what fits around work, life etc. But in an ideal world would you rather train AM or PM?

Also, regarding PM training. How late it too late? What time would you say is too late to lib them?

I prefer first thing in the morning, first light.(before going to work)Before the heat builds up and Percy can get some height.

I have trained in the evening as well(after work),which it may be getting close to dusk.

At least this way they rush home to roost for the evening,no messing about.

Hope this helps !

with youngbirds its all about giving them time to work home if they make a mistake pete but once they are well trained up and from the same spot id lib up to 2 or 3 hours before dark but depends on time of year to and how far this time of year id say no later than 4 or 5 at a push no farther than 20 mile and at a place they know well jmo others may differ in the summer months ive lib yb at 8 oclock at night on good clear nights and have seen birds going over later than that

"OK THEN HERE WE GO, THE FEAR SYSTEM IS USED BY MANY OF TODAYS TOP FANCIERS AND HAS BEEN PRACTISED FOR MANY YEARS NOW WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS, IT GOES LIKE THIS, YOUNGSTERS ARE TRAINED AS LATE IN THE EVENING AS IS POSSIBLE, ONLY GIVING THEM JUST ENOUGH TIME TO MAKE THEIR LOFTS BEFORE DARKNESS FALLS, ON THE FIRST 2-3 TOSS'S IT HAS HAPPENED THAT NO BIRDS MAKE IT TO THEIR LOFTS AND ARE FORCED TO HAVE A NIGHT OUT, SOME TIMES 3/4, 1/2 OR ONLY A HANDFUL OF THE TEAM MAKE IT HOME, BUT WITHIN A WEEK MOST IF NOT ALL YOUR TEAM WILL HAVE SUSSED ON THAT THEY HAVE TO GO LIKE THE CLAPPERS DIRECTLY HOME WHERE THEIR FOOD IS WAITING FOR THEM AND THE SAFETY OF THEIR HOME, MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS ALLOW IN THE BEGINING 5 MINS EXTRA TIME UNTIL THEY KNOW WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT, BASKET THEM AND LEAVE THEM IN THE LOFT FOR ABOUT AN HR BEFORE YOU TAKE EM TRAINING,PUTTING THEIR FEED INTO THE FEED TRAY IN FRONT OF THEM BUT OUT OF REACH, FROM THE MINUTE YOU REACH SAY THE 20 - 30 MILE TRAINING STAGE THE BIRDS NEVER FLY OUT AROUND HOME FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON, ITS JUST BASKET,TRAIN,HOME, EXCEPT SAY SUNDAY FOR A BATH THEN LOCK EM BK UP, SO IN THE BIRDS MIND EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY GO INTO THE BASKET AS FAR AS THEY ARE CONCERNED ITS A RACE TO GET HOME BEFORE DARK AND FOR THEIR FEED, THEY NO NOTHING ELSE, SO COME RACE DAY ONCE THE FLAPS ARE DROPPED THE ONLY THING ON THESE BIRDS MIND IS HOME, THEY PUT IN MAXIMUM EFFORT AND A SUSTAINED ONE RIGHT UPTO THE LOFT ENTRANCE, NEVER DEVIATING FROM THEIR FOCUS OF GETTING HOME AND WITH A CONSISTENT SPEED, YOU HAVE EXPLOITED THEIR FEAR OF THE DARK AND BEING LEFT OUT IN AN UNSAFE ENVIROMENT WHICH PIGEONS DO NOT LIKE, I HOPE YOU CAN SEE WHERE I AM COMING FROM, ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE MAY HELP ME EXPLAIN IT EVEN MORE, NOT ALL OF YOUR BIRDS WILL CUT IT, THEIR INBUILT NATURAL NERVOUS SYSTEM WILL FAIL THEM AND THEY WILL FALL BY THE WAYSIDE, BUT FOR THE ONES WHO TAKE TO IT, WELL I'LL LET THOSE WHO MAY TRY THIS METHOD TELL ME AT THE END OF THE SEASON"

Something quoted from Chris Balson Pete, thought you might have found it interesting.

Summer months early morning training, the air is fresher and winds generally calmer.

This time of year when morning temps are hovering around 6-8C I would train afternoons.

It's interesting and kinda scarey what people would do to win a race I couldn't put mine through that and people who race young birds to the corn tin are baffling in this day and age I don't even darken mine and they win I'd put my young hens system against that system anyday bad enough for the poor b uggers will be useing homeing Percy to chase them home next I do remember some Aussie nutcase training young swimmers by chucking a young crocodile in the pool and giving the kids half a pool head start absolute headbanger it's hard enough to hold youngsters nowadays and any sneaky so and so snooping would have a field day at there next rspb meeting quoting that my friend we are hassling them about Percy and the damage the birds of prey are doing to the sport yet we have crazy lunatics launching youngsters into the air at as near as they think is possible to dusk to get them home from a training chuck in record time good pigeons are born any pigeon worth it's salt don't go rocketing up country without making a mistake I ain't having a go at you my friend it's the things people do under the guise of training youngsters I'm glad I read your post though it's certainly opened my eyes

As stated Darren, it was quoted from Chris Balson, who was the loft helper of at one time one of the greatest flyers in the West Country Henry Gonsalves. I am and always will be a morning trainer as long as the temperatures have hit 10 degrees

I am sure Willey's method will work. A friend of mine used to send his birds training almost every night with a guy who lived about 40 miles from here. The birds were trained very late and in rain as well. The friend concerned was almost unbeatable with his youngsters that year. The system is based on fear but I use a system based on motivation.

I use the Sliding Door System. The Sexes are kept separate and are marked with different coloured rings so that I can identify then quickly and easily. When I train the birds are released two at a time with the hens going first followed by the cocks. When I get back they are mixed together and it is like a big party. As soon as I return I then use a long stick to guide each sex back to their own section and feed them to help them settle down. To give you and idea how this works I have won all the young bird races except one. I topped the Fed against nearly 5000 birds three times and all this was done with third round youngsters flying up to 20 a week.
