square_peg Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 the wind did us no favours....think the percy spooked the doo's no end..but we cant prove it. kelso has never really been kind to us over the years...old and young birds. still think we should....weather permitting , basket sat morning for first young bird race...if we dont try something ...we will get the same result....heavy losses. dont see a problem libbing at 2...3...4 ..for a 50mls race. first race no overnight in transporter,,,,worth a try ????????
nisbetx Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Have a theory based on results posted from various clubs that have posted from kelso today - lauriston- central Edinburgh--1153 yds/min approx. 40 miles to kelsoairth- south side Kincardine--1168 60 miles "stenhousemuir " " --1186 62 miles "clackmanan north side " --1203 63 miles "tillicoutry north " " --1109 63 miles " fife fed- crossgates --1001 49 miles " lochgelly --961 51 miles " leven --848 46 miles " st Andrews --837, 726,678 and 52 miles " these distances are a reasonable average suppositionI checked the live wind speed charts from wind speed stations around Edinburgh to north Berwick and slightly further south around 12 noon. these showed a westerly around 30 mph gusting upto 45 mph on analysing all the above figures I suggest the vast majority of these birds would reach south coast of the forth around north Berwick (as per normal in prevailing strong westerly wind) and either they were were at extremely low altitude and couldn't see across the forth or at some point got caught up with Lanarkshire fed birds, but for whatever reason turned west and flew directly into the strong westerly along south coast of the forth to around Kincardine bridge area, and the birds from the south side of bridge dropped into their lofts. the clackmanan and tillicoutry popped over around the clackmanan, Kincardine bridges area and dropped into their lofts leaving the fife fed birds in mostly unchartered terrioty (remember were talking about young inexperienced birds) to cross over, turn east back to fife reaching crossgates then ballingry, leven,st andrews in turn and if they were in with a bunch from Lanarkshire fed some may have went further west which would affect returns. please analyse these figures closely and make ur own conclusions. READY TO BE SHOT DOWN, LOLo

At the end of the day as you have said Erch, Kelso racing for old and young dosent seem to be paying of for a good race or even good returns, morning basket in and late afternoon liberations for the first couple of races could be the way ahead to settle the birds down, as stated in another post, they are only babies. Am gutted for the amount of work that guys have put in for the race, then they suddenly get slaughtered at the first race, Percy would have done them no favour that's for sure, they would have frightened the life out the birds, and also if the wind turned them, and caught up with a larger convoy, they can any place around the country. This is time when everyone should kit together and get the ybs returned . Hope the returns get better for yous guys.
