I don't know if that's true but the SHU issues a list of airports every year and most have an 8 miles exclusion zone. From some race points the organisers are supposed to notify the ATC in advance that the intend to race from that area and the convoyer should notify them of liberation 30 minutes in advance.

This seems a bit extreme considering the fact that about 600 Geese and 100 Whooper Swans are grazing on a field a few hundred yards from Glasgow Airport.

I believe that airport you refer to is Edinburgh, seems to be a big problem there. It was quoted at a SHU meeting not long ago that there is someone paid to kill birds that could potentially cause serious damage to their aircraft.

Midland fed had a young bird race from the Solway this year, needless to say that some how a batch of these pigeons were killed by an aircraft using this airport. Some dog leg these pigeons took, solway to Airdrie via Edinburgh, crazy.

The plane might have landed at Edinburgh but I doubt if the incident took place there. Very common for arrivals to come out of the south west, often saw them come over the railway at Newbridge.

Your wrong rab they have flight paths , they only change for approach depending on wind direction .

How many shots would they fire off at a batch of doo's flying over an airport? I doubt very much its the figures stated! they wouldn't have the time to take so many. Still it explains losses into Cumbernauld with our airport being such an international hub and all that!

Maybe not as unprepared as you think. Couple of years ago pigeons and airports was discussed at SHU Council - some Councillors had visited Edinburgh prior to my joining - and I was told pigeons do show up on the airport's radar.

I am more worried about RAF jets causing huge damage to teams of birds in the middle of nowhere! nobody to see it happening and they are not likely to report it. How do we find out how often and where they are flying? no chance of ever finding that out. Perhaps they do show up on a radar but how would they be able to do something about it, the doo's would be over and away in a flash!

Take of and landing to me means the same as approach

I am talking about taking of and landing they have no set route for approach it depends on the wind , how would i know the flight paths

i only see them comming into glasgow and taking of and they take of and land in all directions .The post was about round aboot airports not flight paths on route.

The reason the airport people don't want pigeons flying over airfields is because in a collision with a plane, pigeons have the potential to be sucked into the engines, cause damage and bring the plane down. Similarly, the guy in charge of the RAF station near Ripon had something similar to say in his piece published in BHW a good few years back - pilots of jet aircraft are terrified of one thing only and that is pigeons coming through the cockpit windshield.

In meetings with BAA in London, the Unions made clear that nothing can deter pigeons after they have been liberated and found their bearings and on their way home - if there is a runway on the birds' flight path then they will fly across it and there is nothing anyone can do to stop that. But we will make sure that we don't liberate them within 8 miles of an airport. The last thing we need is for someone to ignore that rule, liberate near an airport and down a plane.
