Kyleakin Lofts Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 Fancy That: Calls For The Queen To Battle Ban On North East Pigeon Racing A prolific North East pigeon racer has hit out at calls for the sport to be banned – and he’s looking for support from the Queen. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is claiming that as many as nine out of ten pigeons die during what they call ‘grueling and hazardous’ races. But Sean Hughes, who keeps over 100 of the birds at his Sunderland home, thinks the charity’s claim is wildly exaggerated. He said: “It’s ridiculous. I don’t know where they’re getting their figures.†Sean, who is affiliated with North East Racing Pigeons, bred 35 pigeons earlier this year and claims to have lost none of them during a competition. He added: “For PETA to come along and try and get pigeon racing banned, well, I wouldn’t know what to do. “I just love my pigeons.†And for Sean, pigeon racing isn’t just a hobby – it’s something that has kept him on the straight and narrow. “If I didn’t have racing pigeons, I think I’d be into crime. They’ve kept me off the street and kept me out of trouble,†he said. During an undercover investigation, PETA said they found evidence of birds being forced to fly up to 900 miles in races that involved crossing the English Channel. According to the charity, many survivors of larger races return only to have their necks broken or be gassed to death by owners who think they are not fit for future races. PETA also believes that moving racing pigeons in bulk between the UK and Europe spreads viruses. Sean hopes the Queen, who keeps some 250 racing pigeons at her Sandringham Estate, will back up some 40,000 fanciers across the UK and fight a ban. He said: “If she thinks it’s cruel, then she wouldn’t be racing them. (Source Sky News )

Roland Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 Careful now, I had my post(s) removed for less. Had Mark and Walter stating that it shouldn't be discussed on a pigeon site. Strewth! Stated it isn't happening and that, like the B.O.P. problem, if ignored it will go away. It is but the thin end of the wedge and P.eta are and have been here some time gathering material to use, real or imaginary. Frabricated, enlarged up on or just plain twisted. So be best is to make sure one can breathe well when burying their' heads in the sand Sean.
