Fiona7 Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 I've found a racing pigeon in my garden - it's been here for 4 days. Problem is, I don't know the first thing about pigeons! I now have him in a cage and am giving him wild bird food and water. He seems well but I think he's quite thin - he was certainly very hungry. His ring number is NL 2013 1620682 - I assume this is the Netherlands? I've sent an email to bureau@upo.nlwww.duiven.net (an email address I found) as I'm trying to trace his owner but I haven't yet received a reply. I've also contacted The Royal Pigeon Racing Assoc who have no record of the pigeon but have given me the name of a local pigeon fancier I could try contacting for help. Earlier in the day I had him in a cage in a sheltered area in my courtyard garden and I part-covered the top of the cage so he had more shelter - the courtyard's fairly safe but I felt he'd be vulnerable there overnight and he seemed to be getting distressed as dusk fell so I've since brought him inside to a quiet room where he can stay in the cage - any other suggestions? I've no idea even if I traced his owner whether they'd want him to be repatriated and how long this might take. Any advice you can give on keeping him safe and well in the meantime would be appreciated. Alternatively, do you have any suggestions for places to rehome him? I live near Harleston which is on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
buster151 Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 Myself I would contact the fancier that the RPRA gave you the details for
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 Information for the breeder - try an e-mail (cheaper and easier than a phone call) Friesche Puch Shop Holwoartelstrjitte 199056 PA CornjumThe NetherlandsTel: 06 47959133 / 06 81469970 (I think that would be 0031 6 47959133) E-mail address: info@frieschepuchshop.nl I think the e-mail address for the NPO you have used is incorrect (as they all end in @npoveenendaal. nl ie: ringenadministratie@npoveenendaal.nl ) I would also second what buster151 has said - and contact the local fancier you have details of from the RPRA
greenlands Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 Well done for containing the pigeon,as said above contact the RPRA and they will give you a local clubs address etc. http://www.rpra.org/contact-us/ Lindsay
Fiona7 Posted August 31, 2013 Author Report Posted August 31, 2013 Thanks for the replies. I've tried emailing the breeder in the Netherlands so will wait to see if I hear back. I've also left a message for the local pigeon fancier so, again, I'm waiting at the moment. I've currently got the pigeon in a cage in a quiet room indoors - he's got wild bird food and water and I'm fairly sure he's drinking a little. Is there anything else I should be doing for him to keep him comfortable?
David Linton Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Try the Scottish homing union all my nl pigeons are registered with them
