Scotland - Charity Auction For Help For Heroes

For some years now I have been active in support of Help for Heroes and am the County Volunteer Co-ordinator for Argyll and Bute. H4H is a charity set up to provide life long support for those service personnel injured in conflicts since 9/11. The charities aims are as follows:-

H4H supports veterans and serving personnel who have been wounded or injured, or have become sick, as a result of serving their country. Additionally their families and dependents receive support from the Charity as they care for their loved one, and adapt to the new challenges that they face. Our primary focus is on those affected by recent and current conflicts due to the urgency and extent of their needs. Anyone is welcome to apply for support and will be considered on a case by case basis and referred to our charity partners where appropriate.

H4H is a tri-service military charity, providing support to full time, reservist Servicemen and women and veterans from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.

H4H is strictly non-political. We accept that wars happen under any government and seek to support those people wounded in war, not to comment on the reasons behind such conflicts. Wars are brutal and Servicemen and women are injured almost daily - we can’t prevent this, but together, we can help those who are wounded in the service of our country to recover, and that is our focus; it’s as simple as that.

H4H has no affiliation with any political party and does not endorse the use of its name, brand or images for the promotion of any political viewpoint. The money raised by H4H’s supporters is used to support wounded service personnel regardless of gender, colour or creed and the Charity strongly opposes any individual or political party who would want otherwise, as well as those who seek to use the Charity’s name for their own political gain.

For further details about the charity please check out http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/index.html

Many events are held every year to support the charity, but to date I don't think that any have been organised through the pigeon fancy in Scotland.

To remedy this it is intended to hold an auction near the end of October this year with the funds going to Help for Heroes. The idea is to have the donated birds on display as opposed to promissory donations. It is also hoped to get as much media coverage as possible, so that the fancy benefits as well from the publicity. The venue has not been finalised but will be in the central belt of Scotland.

If any prominent/successful fancier from anywhere in the UK and Ireland would like to donate a bird, either a late bred specially for the sale or an older bird, please pm me your details and I will get back in touch with you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Yours Aye

I sent you pm re this, if members want to donate good, but the line in your thread " Many events are held every year to support the charity, but to date I don't think that any have been organised through the pigeon fancy in Scotland." is not the case there have been 2 on pigeonbasics to the amounts of £7000 plus so a total of £15000, from members of basics so including Scottish, one of the reasons you may not know this is because we dont get any publicity for it, but the members have done well with H4H and other charities to the amount of £28000 in the past 2 years, just to let members know your one is not on basics and run by you at a venue, hope you get the donations and it goes well,

Thanks for the advice on the previous auctions. I will certainly amend any future info I distribute to acknowledge how well the site has supported H4H to date.

I am sorry that you have not received the publicity that you so richly deserve for your efforts. I can only think that you held the auction without registering the fact with H4H. There is no pressing need to register, but it does mean that you get noted and the event given some prominence via the charity's set up.

If I had been more active in recent times on PB I would have known that you had held the auctions but I have not been able to do much "surfing" due to other pressures.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Ian/Blaz, I am sorry that you did not get publicity for your auctions.

As they weren't registered in my area I wouldn't have any knowledge of them, if I had, being a pigeon fancier I would have immediately been interested. Thanks again for your efforts and support for H4H.

Some more information on the Help for Heroes Auction.

It is being held on Sunday 20th October in Gartcosh Works Social Club. This is a great venue with fantastic facilities. It is also well located in central Scotland with easy access from all the main motorways in the central belt. The committee of the Social Club have agreed to lease the facility free of charge and it is the first time they have held an event like this. They admire Help for Heroes so much that they did not hesitate to offer the venue.

There has been a tremendous response form the pigeon fraternity across the UK with birds being offered by many prominent fanciers. Among them are Allan Darragh, T&K Mawhinney, Spence Bros., United Lofts, Joe Morrison and Davie Mawhinney of Northern Ireland. Sheldon Leonard and Billy Cullimore of Ireland. Barry Kinnear, Joe Murphy, Morris Bros., Jim Donaldson, Jim Hannah, Steven Aitcheson, Mick McMurchie, Ricky Young, Mark Findlay, Lindsay Cowan, Grant and McGovern, J&J Hood, GW & P Macaloney, Jim Cameron, Norman Orr, Dave Brown, David McStay and Billy Graham of Scotland. Birds have also been promised from England and it is anticipated that there will be a lot more donated before the day.

The idea is to have birds in pens so that fanciers can follow the old adage that “your eye is your merchant.†Commission bids will be accepted nearer the time and it is hoped that phone bids can be arranged too. The auctioneer is Scottish scribe Joe Murphy. All funds raised less any expenses with go straight to H4H.

Why Help for Heroes? Mainly because H4H believes that any Serviceman or woman who suffers life changing injuries in the line of duty deserves the very best support for life. The charity was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry who were moved to ‘do their bit’ after a visit to Selly Oak Hospital in 2007. The first task, suggested by General Sir Richard Dannatt (then Chief of the General Staff) was to fund a swimming pool at Headley Court (the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre near Epsom in Surrey). Because of legal restrictions it wasn’t possible to channel the money raised through existing Service charities for a capital building project so a new charity had to be established. Help for Heroes was launched on 1 October 2007.

Hope to see you there!

As everyone on this Forum knows i support ALL ventures where possible and it is my intention to go along tomorrow and nod my head on some of the lots offered, however i do not understand what "expenses" will be incurred if the birds are given free, the venue is free and i assume your own efforts putting this MARVELLOUS sale together is free. ??

Well as you see my name is John Quinn and i have organised and run sales many times in the past. I have run around collecting birds from here there and everywhere when the donors couldn't manage to get them to me, or i have had friends who are coming to the sales bring birds along from their respective area's. I have auctioned them myself or i have had friends do the auction on my behalf for free. In all those occasions there were no expenses attached to the sales except my fuel costs which i forego because generally its sales for good causes, eg, Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health. I do hope that gives you an idea of who i am and where my morals are at. atb John.

John I would think its as Danny says as I know he went to Ireland to bring birds over for the sale but I would think there will be a breakdown of the sale I e balance sheet

Pm sent Alan, but i will MAKE IT VERY CLEAR, IN NO WAY AM I QUESTIONING TERRY'S INTEGRITY, or otherwise suggesting there is anything underhand going on. It was a simple question, no more than that.

Me neither Alan and that's all it was, though i do understand how misinterpretation can come into it when asking "money" questions. Am glad however that i have managed to contribute to the sale even though i couldn't find the time to go along.

Gonna miss the show down in Kilmarnock tonight as well cry-blow.gif but work has to come first especially in the off season so i can use up all my favours during the racing season.
