Guest chad3646 Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 for buy the snowdrop, the coltsfoot is one of the earliest flowers to appear , itis a great conditioner for wild birds, as soon as it stops flowering and begins to go to seed they are on it like a flash, the goldie , bullie, greenie,, all sorts of birds , when it dies away you then get the dandelion, chickweed, there are all sorts seeds in the wild, the only one i have tried with the pigeons is the chicken weed that,s because i saw some feral pigeons eating it , my pigeons just pecked it and left it, why eat chicken weed when you can get fillet steak lol has anyone tried seeds from the wild on there birds be it pigeons , canaries , british
peter2010 Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 My dad used to get me to collect dandelions for his canaries before they opened up he'd cut the tops and but a big bunch in they eat all the seeds out them in jig time
andy Burgess Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 have had youngsters eat Haws before and ending up being sick have also had them eat dandelions and , flew very well indeed .
Guest Owen Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 I am sure you are right because there must be very high quality food in wild seed if you have the time and patience to collect it.When I bred small birds in an aviary I used to tie bunches of seeding grasses, dandelions and anything else I could think of to the top of the aviary. The birds enjoyed the seed and the exercise they got from flying up to it all day also did them good.
Guest chad3646 Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 correct owen, fifty odd years ago i had canaries and odds and sorts in the aviary i had a pair of canaries in a cage, i used to go out and gather all sorts of seeds, i did not know what they were, the canaries in the cage were my guinea pigs, i tried them out on them,, if they survived the seed was good, knapweed, burdoch, sow thistle plantain , and the grasses you mentioned comes to mind . happy days
