Guest Denny Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 I have a poorly hen. Having been so lucky for so long as I've managed to miss having problems with my birds for a few years until now. I went into my loft yesterday and was able to pick my favorite hen from the floor. She was not able to stand up or walk way but instead used her wings to pull herself along. I've looked for obviously signs like sparrow hawk sprike as she was out earlier in the morning with the rest of the birds. I have also checked her wings and legs and there are no obvious swellings or injures. I have checked her eyes and croup and all are clear. She is quarantined off with water, food although it would appear that she has not eaten. I am not sure but she does look like she is breathing a little heavier than usual this evening. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong with her as I've not had this problem in my loft before.

Guest geordiejen Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 has the hen recently laid?when a hen lays a nerve can get damaged and the bird usually cannot stand for a day or two.if the bird is not eating then i suspect something more serious.best to get it checked out by a vet who might be able to pinpoint a diagnosis.
Guest homestead Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 if she's just laid it might be a lack of calcium, give a calcium tablet and she will be back on her feet in a couple of days
Delboy Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 If its just laid, get a calcium and a vit b tablet over its mouth, repeat 3 days.
dwh Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 if she just laid it sounds like calcium deficency give her some milk down her throatif it is this she be back on her feet within a couple of hours then add some liquid calcium in the water
Guest Denny Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 Hi, I really appreciate the replies. Yes I can confirm that she has laid, when I picked her up there was an egg on the floor not far from her and when I placed her in quarantine she had laid a second egg. How do I give her calcium? can I give her calcium for human consumption? I had not had to administer it before as usually they never suffer from this sort of thing. Do I crush it, dissolve it?

Guest geordiejen Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 kepp here away from the otheres if possible.open the beak and put the calcium tab to the back of the throat.if its not down far enough she will be able to spit it back out.you can buy liquid calcium and give it to the birds during the breeding season.this exta calcium in the water is very good for the growing youngsters as well.calcium tabs are not ideal but it will do for the hen as a quick fix.thats if it is a calcium deficency.
