just ask me Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 could really be a number of things have seen a few cases of streptococci lately which can have symptoms like this in which case bayril is hopeless more than likely you will need a good canker dose also after the treatment did he say what the bird had do dont happen to have cows near by
rich Posted October 3, 2012 Author Report Posted October 3, 2012 He wanted to put the bird down, he really didn't have a clue
just ask me Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 He wanted to put the bird down, he really didn't have a clue you will have to go with the vet mate just watch in a few days time the canker level could raise to very high levels in the bird a dropping test might be the way to go if all is not getting better in 4 or 5 days time get the dropping tested as you will want to know what ailment is floating around in your loft when you last treat for worms and what u use

Tony C Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 It appears the vet suspects salmonella (paratyphoid) by giving you Baytril. The symptoms you've explained are typical of this disease. Has one of her wings dropped or any swollen joints visible? Have you noticed any mice droppings in your loft? If I were in your shoes I would contact a good avian vet and make arrangements to have the pigeon tested even If it means you have to suppress it and then send it on.
rich Posted October 3, 2012 Author Report Posted October 3, 2012 Oi Oi !!Had mice issues a few weeks back Which I've resolved Do they carry salmonella then ??
Wiley Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 Sounds like you've hit the nail on the head TC, October November is the time paratyphoid usually strikes lofts also. Rich I would send her droppings to an avian vet and made into a culture,
Tony C Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 Oi Oi !!Had mice issues a few weeks back Which I've resolved Do they carry salmonella then ?? I'm afraid so.

Guest geordiejen Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 any sick bird you should remove it from the rest of the stock birds in the section.just about every disease can be spread to other birds in the section if they also have a weakened immune system.if youve had mice in the loft you must clean all hoppers and drinkers with a strong bleach.also it has probably been pissing and shittin all over the loft.put plent of apple cider vinegar in the drinker as the acid in the water will help stop the spread in the drinkers and also line the birds bowel.i would add it 30ml per litre of water for 5 days then 15ml for 5 days after that.if it is salmonella e-coli then the bird can be a carrier but its been proven all pigeons have some sort of level of this bacteria in the system.sick birds must be removed and brought back to health before entering them back into the loft.although if a bird is that sick then the best advice is to eliminate it from the loft forever.
William Reid Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 Oi Oi !!Had mice issues a few weeks back Which I've resolved Do they carry salmonella then ??Think you need nifuramycin m8.
Guest Owen Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 Vaccinate the bird 3 times at weekly intervals with De Weerd paramixo vaccine. If you don't have De Weerd Columbavac is fine. Then get the bird swab and droppings tested. And isolate it idealy where it can see other birds but not mix with them. I personnaly would not use Baytril in a case of this sort but if you do you will need to use plenty of fresh garlic in the water and Lugols iodine a couple of times a week for at least a month. To be honest you must consider getting rid of the bird especially if it is the only one that is ill because it may have problems beyond anything you can deal with. Also if a bird is ill this time of the year when they are not doing much except moulting it may be beyond help and not be able to recover.
gulkie Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 Batril is a wide spectrum antibiotic most vets give this as a first resortIsolate bird then get sample of for testing and stop all this guessing Sounds like a lack of calcium just my pennies worth.
