Maggie Thatcher my hero!! She sent the Argies home to think again :):P

Why!!!? Wasn't because they were  'Sovierenty of our Country' nor was it because they were devoted and loyal members of our 'Family' etc. as she proclaimed. It was in order that she could biuld a 'Fortress' to guard her cronies overseas investments of minerals.... Have to bring them out via Boats!

But when the USA DID murder 3000 of our loyal and devoted brethern, who fought side by side with us in two world and other wars.... she never even made a deal of it... just stated 'I've sent a letter of Protes'!

The Argies as you call them wewre set up to go in via Reagan... an excuse only! Streuth!

Money and greed, and maggie was the Essence of it. Unfeeling and counted the 'Working man' on several occasions, even publically as 'No Account' and 'They'll have to ge over it'! syndrome. :P ;D ;D

P.s. I don't like one iota what she did and  / or stood for' incase you never noticed lol

Great thread, it's like a month of history at School rolled into 4 hours.

Perhaps the mods could create a new section on the forum " British History" with Roland made the mod for this section. Brilliant

Cheers

unions ucw (post office)

have been giving money to the labour party even increased the levy to help tony blair get into power

who put the nails in the coffin of the ucw  comrades i say

the same unions were going on free drinking weekends at the expensive of its members

doing deals with management to save guard there little offices in each delivery office at the expense  of the poor postmen who lost there jobs

as for the miners my family came from mining on both my mother side and my fathers i was a bit young to comment but i always remember my dad saying the government would never back down as thatcher was so tough being a lady she must have been to get to no 10

turned out she was

Paulo you speak sense. And as for the Demobb boys, and their compensation, it is the same today.../. get pittance after waiting and fighting for it over 2 - 3 years... The 'Gentreel' straight off. No Officers' wifes are kept waiting.

We use to collect, donate etc. food, clothing and money for the miners... took most to Corby as they held a better linkage.  Indeed Was about to place Train Lines from there to Loughborough / Coalville district to enable the 'Steelmenn' to have jobs in the 'Open' mining parts to be set up. Of course after Thatcher's and Co's Heavy investing in Korea, Taiwan, Brizil etc. the Steelworks were needed to close to get great gains on these investments.

So the BEST steel in the world bar one ... but best when mixed with some Swedish ORE, WERE delibrately clobbered too by Thatcher.

Now as for 'Scabs' I was peeved off at them... But 2 things always stick in my crull... One, regardless of 'Tax payers' money she was determine at all and any cost to swelter the coffers of her cronies. ... So was indeed and fruitless cause ... and Scargill was one of the best unionist of all time without a shadow of doubt ... and 2. Some are stronger mentally, physically and enable to go the course, whilst others seeing the philght of their loved ones suffering, just couldn't hack it! So then, as now, qand in retrospect I have to feel for the scabs, and allow some humanity to show them... unlike that evil *expletive removed*!

12 Billion that could have, and should have been invested in 'Open Pits' forget the correct term, and saved job's, and better working conditions, that meant thousands more still putting £'s thousands into the Countries Coffers and not taking out to help Investors overseas. Better spent saving the silverware, than giving it away nigh so the Tax Payer bolstered private rackateering.

Yes very well stated here.

The strike had not been about wages, better conditions or any material gain. It had been waged on principle; the principle that miners jobs were held by each generation of workers in trust for those who would come after them, and must not be wantonly destroyed.

The Tory Government had spent 12 billion of the nations money to try to defeat the National Union of Mineworkers. This they had failed to do; despite the fact that the NUM did not achieve its ultimate objective. The resolute stand of men and women over sixteen months marked a tremendous step forward in workers power and solidarity.

This strike had set a new example in working class struggle, marking another milestone in a long road. It had been hard, bitter, painful, and as in 1926, there were those who said that never again would the British trade union movement see such a conflict. As in the aftermath of 1926, only time will tell.

ote ' ...I didn't know Winston had shares in Krupp no wonder he could afford them big cigars and the bottle of brandy a day he supped lol'

Yep, that is why Hitler always thought that Britain would join him.... Did other deals during the war with him.... and after the war, all the good steel making machines, like from Stewart and Lyodds were shipped over to Germany.

Yes possibly was the reaal reason the would be King deducted etc.

Saw a photo, last year in fact, where all the Kings of Europe were put together. Our Germany Austria etc. and you know what all looked like  brotherss!

Good one Roland!  But perhaps our coal reserves, will be needed in the future. Who Knows?

Anyway, Isn't  this getting a bit morbid?    How about this.  I will start a little ditty to the tune of Maggie May, and any would be songwriters can add there tuppence to it.

Dirty Maggie, may I say? They've taken her away,

She'll never haunt the working class no more.

Her speeches, (once respected) have lately been rejected.

'Cos her marbles are rolling on the floor.

Do you remember poor old Dennis and their idiotic son?

And a daughter, much darker than the knight.

By Golly! She slipped up, 'tween her lips and cup!

Has she turned left, instead of going right.

Congrats to Arthur Scargill achieved nothing, killed the trade unions and all the good they did for years. What he should have concentrated on was better pensions, better training and better healthcare for the miners instead of using thousands of families to wage his political ideology with the government.

Scargill killed the unions not Thatcher!

garbage, you know who killed the unions off? WE ALL DIDwe all sat back remembering the time when they did not help us why help them?divide and rule its the british "ruling classes" biggest advantage that is why we get the worst of everything we are our own worst enemy, thats why creatures like thatcher got away with it for, because we all got greedy [iam alright jack]they let us buy our houses and sold everything else off while we wern't looking and we all think we do alright out of it

Exactly.... and they sat back and took for granted what so many had given, fought for so they could!

Simple one you all hear about the two peasants in a field... If you had Two houses could I have one... Answer 'Of course. then Two cars, two bikes till it is 6 chickens, then the answer is Hold on I'VE GOT six chickens, and away most go saying with smugness on face Exactly.... But you know, before the 60's THAT would have still been , OFcourse you could have one... for it happened time after time.

Just who does one think got these rights as of a right regards employment? And just who put into place 'Tempory Contracts'!!! Yes the Evil one.

And let's not forget the very essence of who caused so many strikes etc.!!! No not the workers, but managerment on owners say so... and WHY! Because when short time, or work was falling off, instead of paying a sensible agreed %tage of a wage, they caused the work force to take action and as such save themselves paying for the Shortfall of agreed employee's losses.

Get real here, workers never wanted to be out striking willy nilly, or so called fame seeking, for the reality there was / isn't any gain or fame attached to it.... Just to save the bosses money!

Maggie did indeed set Unions back ,all for the sake of profit, for her Masters, and again history is repeating itself to day, look at the Industries and jobs being sourced in poorer Countries, again all for the sake of bigger profits

That's not the way I remember it. The man who should have led the NUM after Joe Gormley, the Scots leader Mick McGahey, had the rules changed to stop him being President, some say because he was a Communist. I don't think Gormley or McGahey would ever have been suckered into a fight that couldn't be won either. Scargill destroyed the NUM, the miners were the strongest group in Trade Union Movement, the shock troops, they'd never been beaten, beat them, you beat the rest of us. Steelworkers were the next to fall, ... domino affect, then legislation changed to emasculate the whole Movement.

And sell us stuff we already own through our taxes? What a bunch of plonkers we are. She made Gas, Electricity, Phone, etc Companies put up their prices above inflation year after year; to make them more attractive for floating on Stock Market then asked us - their customers - to buy shares in them. Aye Right. And as for buying council houses, where's the houses for young folk now? She stopped Council house building, she forced council house sales to sitting tenants, so only folk building houses were private companies ... at grossly inflated prices.

No apathy here ... f*ck your centralised one shirt fits all government and your tory trash, we've our own government now, they listen.

Policitians are a pain in the bum at times they forget that they work for us and think they rule. I honestly think at times that the queen would do a better job of governing than the current government at least she cares about her subjects.

If she ever uses her powers over the armed forces and calls a military coup I'll be up for it

Do you know I can't believe what some of you are saying. Maggie Thatcher had no interest or regard for people other than the rich. People like the Bankers who have just shown you their true colours. And the Politicians who have deliberatly created the mess for personal gain. As regard the Arges. She gave the order to sink a ship, The Belgrano, with hundreds of conscripts on it. It was outside the exclusion zone and sailing away from the action. I call that murder.

She had police bullies charging civilian pickets, old men and boys included, and tried to make out that the violence was caused by the miners. She was busing these bullies all around the country. If you don't believe me just look up the injuries to the miners.

As for the scabs, because that is what they were and are, they knew what to expect when they decided to become miners. They, in the end, helped Maggie to destroy communities and lives. You may want to forgive and forget, I don't.

Now here in South Wales they have the cheek to want to extact coal by open cast. No matter about people's health and the damage done to their homes. It is the same type of greedy, selfish individuals at it again. And guess what? The scabs these days are the clowns who carry out their bidding or even the so called security men who strong arm the odinary people to help the bullies get their way.

There is a lot more where that came from but I had better leave you to work it out for yourselves.

for what it is worth i agree with everything you say apart from the The Belgrano, in time of war the direction of the ship is irreverent it needed doing and it got done a conscript can kill you just as easy as a "pro"

I don't agree with you about the Belgrano either those conscripts as you called them were fighting out of prepared positions with plenty of ammo and heavy weapons and they killed a lot of HM Forces over there.

At the end of the day they started the war and the sub captain was well within his rights of sinking the ship. War is war big boys games and big boys rules unforturely. If anyone in that war was a murderer it was the Junta for fighting a war of aggression on British soil they took the best on and they paid heavily for it.

They tried to drop napalm on the paras at goose green thats not exactly according to the rules of war is it?

I agree with single word of the above... and in the Geneva Convention, such acts as the sinking of the Belgrano was illegal... purely as A. Against the ethics and codes of War. B. Straight forward humanitarian reasons ... they were retreating outside of the Zone THATCHER had set up, and YES it was murder of very many inocent lives.

maybe should have a court for her too... Mind only difference between her and Mugarbee is.... :-/ :-/ Oh yes she didn't as such murder her own... She left them to pay for her tyrrany.
