blaz Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 thought i would put a wee bit up on how i train my yb,s and why. when i got back in to racing in 2009 .i would get yb,s out everyday and let them fly to open bowl. i always rattle the tin at feeding time.yb,s are quick to realize that the rattle means food (well most of them).when yb,s start to range (fly out of sight for half hour or more) then i would start training from 10 miles and build it up to about 25 miles. weeks before the 1st race in 2009.i lost my fair share of yb,s training with bops the stress of getting caught and put in basket almost daily to run the gantlet of bops and all the rest thay encounter when training i won a few yb races in club in 09 but the late rab ritchie had me beat a few times. i said to him one Saturday after he beat me .that must be all the training your given them. rab said listen son the only time my yb,s have been in a basket for training was 3 day,s before the 1st race. i took them to sutra hilll about 11 mile to rab,s. he also said my yb,s are out evry morning for as long as they want and do plenty flying then. i did not believe him and knew that magnus helped him so gave him a phone .he told me word for word what rab said.so 2010 i let yb,s out everyday .i trained them on the Wednesday Thursday before 1st race from sutra hill 10 mile to me .then 1 suta hill each week through racing .the yb,s got trained from 17 mile the week before or yb open newark 216 miles to me. i had a very good yb season and was lucky enough to take 1st 3 in club and 6th 8th 9th open yb,s newark. 2011 changed things and has a bad yb season. this year 2 10 mile trainers from sutra hill wed and tur before 1st race .all birds home bar 2 race 60 miles .2x10 miles training 2nd race 60 miles all home bar 2 2x 10 miles training sutra hill 3rd race 87 miles all home bar 2 again. alot of fanciers that train more and from further have lost more than i have.i am by far not the best at flying yb,s in my fed but hold my own. with very little training . their are some that have trained alot less than this in my fed and yb,s are doing very well . so worth a wee bit of thought do we really need to have or yb,s running the gantlet of bops and other things that their up against day after day.

maverick Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 Before i took ill i trained 3 times a week i took my ybs and ian summers birds i trained early in morning from denholm 50 miles by road to my loft birds getting away around 6 and home by 7.30 we both had around 50 youngbirds and had very few losses the last year i raced first youngbird race i sent 46 after the last youngbird race i had 37 left. will be back racing next year after 4 years not racing and will be doing the same again would have raced youngbirds this year but hawk problem at loft left me with few birds good luck to all get up early and train before the hawks get up
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 Guess its like a lot of things in pigeon racing what may be good for one fancier is not so good for another, remember years ago I would train my youngsters twice a day from about 20 miles and do really well, this year I trained quite a lot up to the first race but now there racing some weeks they have a midweek toss other weeks they dont and I am having a really good season up to now with them.

blaz Posted September 9, 2012 Author Report Posted September 9, 2012 with our fed yb season at an end. looking back on it it has been my best yb season racing.i started with 44 i have 3 that took hits 23 that have raced from 60 miles to 216 miles.i had 1 or 2 in fed result each week bar 1 race. not all the 18 birds where lost racing as had the bop hear a few times. the thing i did different from before are.my yb,s where out all day flying to open bowl.birds got trained twice before 1st race 2 x 10 mile on the Wednesday and Thursday then 1st race 2x10 miles 2nd race 2x10 miles 3rd race 1x10 miles 4th race 1x 10 miles 5th race 2x10 6th race. birds got their main 10 miles on the thursday afternoon or morning if i could not get a lift. birds would be out flying before going 10 miles or if in morning out flying after it.birds would not be out flying on a friday birds feeding was a mix of 20k bag breed and wean 20kbag all rounder 10 k of high protein.feed on sat /sun/mon/tue/wed/ high carbohydrate mix i used versa laga super widowhood mix feed on thu/fri. i did not scrip on feeding checking that all had eaten their fill and only a few bits left in hoppers.also when i take yb,s and put them in the yb section if yb,s go in to the 3 old bird sections when out flying i leave them their.i let them decide where their most happy to race to and less stress for them.a lot of them stay in yb section bUt not all.this will not be the best way to train and race yb,s.for me it was easy and simple yb,s not flying gauntlet and all the stress that goes with it with daily long training.i also stayed competitive each week with natural yb,s and their yb education was as stress free as i could make it.also a few quid saved on petrol
