hi , just wondered what age a racingpigeon is considered past it , i have a 7 year old hen who flys well at the distance and have picked up a few cards in the past , but nothing lately , my fellow fancyers say its time to retire her , yes , no , your thoughts please

I guess you have bred off her in the past is she breeding anything any good, only you know best

really as if she,s breeding the goods I would retire her if not keep racing her she might pick up a few more positions.

I have a 6 year old at present never done nowt when he was raced natural until 2yo,then put him on roundabout at 3yo and he flew great with plenty of top tens in the club including 3x 2nd's he was racing well again last year until he went missing in a fast east wind race got reported months later in patna ayrshire minus most of one wing and half a tail with a falcon strike,This year he has never been settled at exercise and always on edge gave him his first race on saturday with the intent of sending him to one of the classics but he has only just returned today and will not leave his box now think he's had enough and his bottle has gone so i will retire him and let him enjoy his life,as surely if i am relying on a six year old something wrong me thinks

if she breeding the goods i wouldn't risk her in most cases at that age her best days are behind her there always a exception to the rule though

i have 2 x 7 year olds to which i will retire this year and both have taken cards on our club result this year and one scoring in the federation section, if they are still in the loft at this age theyve earned their perch & retirement

have topped fed with 9 yr old cock my good blue hen won sect at eastbourne at 8yrs old

she has always been a good bird , was set up to go to ypres last year but she broke a flight and i made a mess of sorting it ,as a 7 yr old she was one of the few birds on night from maidstone shes 10 this year but not had a race as yet but had a few trainers , might just leave her and get a few of her myself now her sister won sect at newbury and her nest mate was 4th sect newbury . The oldest bird i have raced is 11 yrs but have had a few oldies done well up to 9 or 10 , as long as you havnt murdered them they will last longer but only if they can evade percie and sparrs .

 

PS the old blue hen turned up 2 imes from newbury nat hawked wing n tail oot but on the day

many thanks for your thoughts , yes john i think your right , its time for a retirement perch . plus it will stop me worrying when she is a little late , we do get attached to certain birds sometimes , cheers
