Guest geordiejen Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 can you tell me what you do when the weaned youngsters will only eat the small seeds and not the peas or beans.the feeding trogh is ful of maple peas and white peas.should i take out whats left and put it back into the seed tin or should i just leave it and let the youngsters be forced to eat it.is there a yb seed mix that has no large stuff in it?the mix im using right now is breed and wean with no maize.
Guest ljb107 Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 I'd leave it until they eat it. Can't say i've had a problem with them not eating the bigger seeds out of the nest, although i don't wean my yb's. Lloyd
Tony C Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 For the first week after my youngsters are weaned I sieve all the small seeds out of the breeding mix and feed them all the large grains mixed with peanuts and tic beans. After this initial week they're then fed 100% breeding mix and the first thing they eat is all the large stuff leaving the small stuff till last.
gulkie Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 u r giving them to much to eat or they would eat the lotcut down on their feeding and they will soon eat what u give them
Wiley Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 As Tony says large grains are the key, we give our birds for 3 full days maples only, then 3 days only of maize then on the young bird mix
Guest geordiejen Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 ok i will just leave the trough until the birds empty it.hopefully they will take the larger seed,i suppose they are not going to starve themselves waiting on the small seeds coming.will keep an eye on them make sure they are all eating ok.

Rather than leaving the trough in with food on I would remove it for 8 hours or so then put it back in.
Guest robscott Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 once young birds are in young bird compartment feed breed n ween.let them eat as much as they want till flying in a group round the loft, then cut morning feed down but still let them eat as much as they like on evening feed.ok time to train your young birds, change feed to gerry plus keep them on gerry plus for first 4 races,on week of 5th race start mixing 50% gerry plus 50% widowhood mix.the last 2 races of the young bird programe are the longest so now you want to feed 100% widowhood mix.i used this exact system and won 1st club 1st fed 1st tyne tweed section, runner up in young bird averages (most i sent was 16) also joint best young bird in club.once i staRTed using gerry plus my loft took alight
