wings Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 Hi again i'm looking for some advice. As I have said in a previous post that i'm looking to move houses in the next 6/8 weeks my problem is, I have breed my first round of yoing birds and they are now sat on the perches in the aivery. Normally I would be letting them sit on the let board about now just getting them used to the area and coming in and out of the trap. My question is how long could i leave it before having to nget them out obviously i want themt o be trained to the new location, but as stated earlier it may be some time before i move there, what i don't want is a fly away as soon as i let them out. your comments and adivce would be greatly appreciated. Regards Wings
Guest Dorset-lad Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 Hi is there not anyway you could just put a shed up in the new place and put them there now ? it might save a lot of trouble at a later date. if its a distance away maybe you could get a local fancier to help out with the feeding etc just a thought. regards brian
Guest IB Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 If they are in an aviary, they will already have a 'fix' on their home. Much better kept inside the loft I think as there is no point 'engraining' anything about their old loft if they are going to a new location. I think they'll still need 7-10 days in an aviary there, and shown the way in, before you let them out. Yes, your youngsters will be strong on the wing, but on the positive side that also helps keep themselves out of trouble when they do get out.

I work in scotland and live in Lancashire so I was trying to make it as painless as possible.

Do you think that I could dark hessian the aviary so they cannot see out? not all of them have been on the perches yet.
JADE Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 I can remember a fancier moving about 150 miles south with team of young birds which had never been out at his old address. As far as I know they did not get out of the loft until July and went on to score from the young bird national.
andy Burgess Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 in 2008 i moved my first round of 17 youngsters ,i had been waiting for planning permission ,and it was slow coming .had the youngsters flying out for over a week .as soon as i got the letter of approval, they were hept in old loft and couldnt see out .put new loft up ,moved them in ,built a temporary avairy over door and left door open all day . fed them lightly same time just before dusk . after 3 days i took avairy away ,let them out 1/2 hour before feeding time .pecked about for 10 minutes then woosh up they went ,some flying ,some on roof tops ,one headed East never to be seen again .at feeding time shook the tin and most in , just 2 short . dont get me wrong ,my heart was in my mouth ,but pigeons are clever ,they soon get to know where the food is . good luck.
